Laudate_Dominum
I feel like a fool every time I miss Sunday Mass at St. Boniface because of my lame sleep schedule. If I am as serious about the Mass as I claim to be I will not let this happen again. hehe
Laudate_Dominum
Yeah, I went there a few times over a year ago and people actually knelt and a different priest said that Mass (he actually had decent homilies). I am saddened by the apparent decline of the parish. I used to consider it to be comparable to Holy Rosary (perhaps slightly better in the area of music) but times have clearly changed.
Actually I have to admit that one time over a year ago I went to that Mass and it was not the usual priest (the one who seems quite orthodox), whoever this other priest was, he had some people from a Protestant ministry give childish and condescending skits for the homily!!!!!!!!!!! I blocked that experience out of my mind but recently remembered it because of this Wizard of Oz thing.

(Mass here is at noon, so thankfully I don't have much chance of sleeping so late I miss that! But its our only option, so if I did miss it... I was never there for a midnight Mass or Easter Vigil, but my friend told me that there are lights in the ceiling that they turn on and it looks awesome. I can only imagine how it will look fully restored. Next time we're visiting (we have family there) we'll have to check it out. (And you know, nothing against JPII, but that really wasn't the place for that mural.)

I always found the artistic quality of the thing to be lacking too, and it definitely clashed with the rest of the interior. One of the things I've always loved about that Church is the fact that it was consecrated by Saint John Neumann himself!! Having the interior restored to its original state will be very edifying for me personally.

My in laws parish, this past Easter, received as a gift an "icon" of Christ risen from the dead. The unfortunate truth is that this ENORMOUS (over 11 feet high, and placed very prominently so all can see it within the Church proper) piece of "art" is awful: Jesus looks not only constipated, but like he's under arrest or being mugged (and his hair is slightly reminiscent of Farah Fawcett)--totally irreverent of me, but I dubbed the painting "Stick 'em up Jesus". Its also totally symmetrical--icons aren't supposed to be symmetrical. And one last critique, you can't see the wounds in the palms of his hands, my mother in law says they just look dirty, like he's all greasy and just come out of a mechanics garage. It was a beautiful thought on the part of the donors, but the person they selected as the artist for this piece must have been a bit out of their league. jiyoung
jiyoung, It was St. Paul's parish across the river. There is a priest there who I talked to in the past and he seemed orthodox to me but whoever this other priest is... never mind. That parish is now on my black list and I warn other area residents to avoid it if they can.
My friends told me about that church, that one priest is good but the other is...well, as you said, never mind. heh. Also--your two bits of news about St. Peter's has made me VERY happy I love that place! And if they have the FE AND get rid of that mural, well, I don't know if I could contain my joy
Ash Wednesday
fisheaters is a good site, i so no reason why one cant link to it? whats there to be afraid of?
I think it's because they have resources from SSPX. I believe links to "phishy" schismatic sites or ones that use such sites as a resources are forbidden on phatmass, and I can certainly understand why -- as it may be confusing to people discerning what is "Catholic" in full communion with the Church. The site has a lot of good resources, and some of their sentiments I certainly understand -- but some of it also rubs me the wrong way and I find it stuffy and suffocating. I do like the section on the four temperaments, though.
Thomist-in-Training
Yah, I love the old-timey stuff in the "Being Catholic" section, but can't stand how the author puts the FSSP, and those who attend their Masses, in the same bracket as the SSPX. I don't go there any more as I am too apt to be tempted to adhere to the SSPX as having a simple and unified explanation of things, but I know that it's better to stick with Rome even if it's confusing! (I pray for the SSPX like crazy though!)
photosynthesis
sedevacantist discussion is banned from their forums. debates pro and con about the sspx are permitted on one forum only. I personally think that it is a great collection of facts about Catholic Traditions that are not compiled anywhere else on the net. The forum gives more free reign to slightly more questionable or borderline traditionalist sentiments than are allowed here, but doesn't let anyone promote anything really extreme like sedevacantism. all in all, I'd totally recommend it as a good supplement to phatmass to people of traditional mindsets who want to be well informed about the issues surrounding the traditionalist movement from the fssp to the sspx and everywhere in between.
I agree. Fisheaters is a good resource for information about all things traditional. There are some schizomatics on their forum, but I'd say that most people there are just really orthodox, really traditional Catholics in communion with Holy Mother Church. Michael Schmitz of the Institute of Christ the King, Sovereign Priest. Msgr. Schmitz was ordained by Pope Benedict (Cardinal Ratzinger at the time) and gave one of the best homilies I've ever heard in my life yesterday; one of those homilies that you just keep mulling over all day and beyond. This was Fr. Talarico's first Mass and I can't believed I was so blessed as to have been able to assist. *is stupified*
I love Msgr. Schmitz! He is such a kind priest, and a wonderful confessor. He's supposed to be coming to my parish next month and I can't wait. Fr. Talarico is now the rector at my parish (St. Anthony's in West Orange, NJ) and he's wonderful too.
After Mass this priest blessed everyone individually and I was one of the last people to get blessed and even after hundreds of blessings he did not yield any of the solemnity and gave no indication of hurriedness.
I experienced the same thing. He's never hurried in the way he prays and you can tell that he is totally in love with his vocation.

I haven't done too much browsing on Fisheaters, but I love their veil article. I agree that it might not be the best site for those a bit weaker in their faith, or however it was worded, but I think the site is pretty cool. jeffpugh
I don't mind the site. I've read a few sketchy articles on the being Catholic page (they were outside articles, though), but other than that, I find it a good resource.
