haha, this thread is awesome!

Ah, memories...

I was on vacation last week and had to go to the forma ordinaria. Yikes!! I can't believe the nonsense these people get away with (I will spare you the scandalous details -- ok, one little sample: concelebrating EM's). It is strange to me that the violent suppression of the Catholic Mass (meaning the historical Roman rite) is often seen as a great victory within the Church. Virtually every time I assist at the Mass of the 60's and 70's I come away asking myself who exactly could see this state of affairs as a victory (I see things at Mass that would make Martin Luther turn over in his grave). The stereotype about the pre-conciliar church in which there was a crisis of Catholics with excessive private devotions and all that does not seem very bad: at least you knew when you were in a Catholic church. Thank Bugnini that at least one crisis has been abated; I can't remember the last time I saw someone praying the Rosary at the forma extraordinaria. Yay!

I like praying the Rosary during the forma extraordinaria. It helps me focus on what's really going on during the Mass instead of the Haugen-Haas, altar girls and random charismatic ad-libbing.

Since I believe that the Church is guided by the Holy Spirit I must believe that someday there will be a motu proprio allowing marginal celebrations of the novus ordo for Catholics who may still be attached to this form. Although given recent historical precedents a radical and complete suppression is certainly possible.

I bring my chotki to Mass and often use it as a preparatory thing but I do buy into much of the early Liturgical Movement's concept of liturgical piety so I'm not comfortable actually praying private devotions at Mass. I do think the relationship between private devotions and the Liturgy was largely misrepresented by the deformers. I thought it was phat when Pope John Paul II spoke of how the Rosary sustains the Liturgy in his encyclical on the Rosary. There is not some kind of dichotomy between the two although there can be an excessive kind of private devotionalism that can impoverish actual participation in the greatest prayer of the Church.

Oh, and the "thank Bugnini" comment that you quoted was basically sarcastic.

It could happen, but God only knows.

Yeah, I'm just trying to maintain a positive outlook. hehe, call it good old Christian hope.

<tangent>

This is a complete tangent but I was going through my collection of pictures from Cardinal Mahony "Masses" and there was one Mass which involved a laptop computer and I couldn't figure out what the deal was, until now. There was a Jesuit liturgical conference a while back and one of the presenters spoke of how the fundamental meaning of the Liturgy for post-modern man is "creativity" and how this creativity should involve technology and Mass media if it is to be "cutting edge". In essence I speculate that the laptop was integrated into the show (I dare not call it a liturgy) as an icon of the pop-media culture and as a kind of prop serving to articulate an interpretation of the liturgical action. I am afraid to see how these people are going to be "creatively" integrating technology and mass media into the Mass down the road (they are not as "fringe" as we might like to believe). Those on the "cutting edge" seem to approach the celebration of the Holy Mysteries as one might approach an advertising campaign. The distortion of Pope Saint Pius X's meaning of "active participation" has apparently culminated in the Mass as an interactive medium or "ad space".

Anyone who actually believes in the Catholic Faith ought to experience horror and shame in the face of such perverse attacks on the source and summit of our Christian life.

Even though I have no interest in posting at Fisheaters, I sincerely doubt that one will find Mahony's "T'Pol, Our Lady of the Vulcans" venerated there:

Vulcan fashion is both logical and clean.

OK.

I don't find this particularly beautiful either. But, despite the fact that our tastes differ from those in the diocese where this statue is located it is still intended to venerate the Blessed Virgin, and it makes me feel funny to hold it up as an object of mockery.

just a side note, i don't know anyone in this diocese who has that taste :mellow:

that being said, i agree with terra, the spirit of mockery also made me uncomfortable :idontknow: i also can't believe this is the only example of "ugly church art" out there, yet its the only one that ever gets brought up.

lol, except for that lt. worf altar from the debate table :lol:
