photosynthesis
OK. I don't find this particularly beautiful either. But, despite the fact that our tastes differ from those in the diocese where this statue is located it is still intended to venerate the Blessed Virgin, and it makes me feel funny to hold it up as an object of mockery.
I see what you're getting at, but I think that picture is an example of people misusing the gift of creativity. God gave us the ability to make art so that we can express our devotion to Him and bring others closer to Divine Truth through beauty. Many postmodern artists take this wonderful gift and use it to make political statements that try to undermine the Church's standards of beauty and truth. I don't necessarily think religious artists should just recycle everything that is good about Western Christian art, but the only traditional iconography used in this sculpture is the posture of her hands and the moon at her feet. It's hard to see Mary in this sculpture, but it's easy to see that the artist has the intention of changing what the viewer believes about feminine beauty. I mean, that outfit looks like it belongs at a GWAR concert. The symbolism is... a little off. If anything, the sculpture is a mockery of Our Lady because it portrays her as some androgynous sci-fi alien thing and not the most amiable Mother of God. If Mary is the image of the Bride of Christ, then what does this picture say about the Church? Obviously the artist didn't create this sculpture with the intention to bring about devotion in the soul, but to undermine the Church's teachings about femininity and beauty. jeffpugh
Even though I have no interest in posting at Fisheaters, I sincerely doubt that one will find Mahony's "T'Pol, Our Lady of the Vulcans" venerated there:
I reiterate, what's all this then? What does the picture represent? I'm not getting it...

N/A Gone
Isnt much worse than making her a white woman you could argue. Sorry, L_D, I love your pictures but they make me sad because I dont have that anywhere within at least an hour drive of where I live. And I am in a big town. The churches near me are trying to be so modern they come across as porely done protestant services with liturgy. Yea, im gonna start havin some emo moments again. There's nothing worse than an "Emo Mass."
