Theology Project

My Theology teacher gave the class a project. He told us to choose any moral subject (from divorce to hunger to pornography) and to make a Power Point Presentation with information either in support or in opposition to the subject.

I decided to be unique and creative and chose the subject of receiving the Most Holy Eucharist in the state of mortal sin.

The title of my presentation is:

The Most Holy Eucharist: The Sin of Receiving in Sin

I know that I could get into
-who the M.H.E. is
-transubstantiation
-sin, more specifically mortal sin

and then round it all together to give an answer on why it is a sin to receive the M.H.E. in the state of mortal sin.

Immediately I put the CCC and Sacred Scripture onto my list of sources, but here's where you guys come in.

Can someone recommend specific places in the CCC and, more importantly, in Sacred Scripture where I can find useful quotes and information regarding the subject?

And, to really spice my presentation up, can anyone either give me good books/websites to find writings/quotes from Doctors of the Church or even Canon Law that would pertain to this subject?

Thanks a lot. I'm really excited about this project. I made the title page only a few minutes ago and I absolutely love it.

Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. But let a man prove himself: and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of the chalice. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord.

I stand by it. However, I will say this...if you get the second edition Catechism, the green one, there's a glossary in the back which references the paragraphs relevant to its topics, such as "mortal sin" and "Eucharist" and once you find those passages, they will often reference Scripture passages and other theological works you can then look up as references. There's also an index of citations, allowing you to look up each place that a certain Bible passage appears (such as the one HSmom quoted) in the CCC and find where the Catechism addresses it...

Ooo. Very interesting. Thanks.

My teacher recommended http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc.htm

Is that the same thing as you recommended, just in online form?

BTW, the main reason I asked for help is because I'm really bad at remembering where certain quotes/subjects were addressed in the Bible. And, because I really have no idea when it comes to Canon Law, Church documents, encyclicals, etc. that would help on a certain subject.

Thanks anyways. ^_^ ( :P )

Yeah, that's a great website. You'll find this helpful: http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/index/a.htm

If you want to score bonus points with your theology teacher, I'd go deeper than to say just what the Church says about it and say why she teaches that. You might try looking up what the Eucharist is for the Church (the CCC and the Vatican II document Lumen Gentium will be helpful), what mortal sin (especially public mortal sin) does to that same aspect of the Church, and what sanctions the Church has put in place to keep those sins from happening.

God bless,

Micah

Awesome. Should I mention it to my teacher to get his approval, or surprise him?

At the current moment, my Table of Contents is:

I. The Most Holy Eucharist
II. Mortal Sin
III. "The Sin of Receiving in Sin"
IV. How to Prepare for Holy Communion

It's very general. I'll have to see how specific my teacher wants it. I'll also have to figure out where to throw in what you mentioned.

You are a mod mom, could you cut/paste-nip/tuck things into a new thread so I can tlak to you and Raphael?
Hey, wait! By all means, continue with your discussion. *takes notes for project*

Check out http://www.USCCB.org <- they have the Catechism and Holy Scriptures, great advanced search feature.

Catechism: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/

Also check out http://www.ScriptureCatholic.com

I would also suggest reading at least one chapter in the Scriptures every day for at least a few years.... read it over and over and take notes that interest you.

God Bless,

Laudate_Dominum

Looks like people have already covered the main stuff.

If you want some more authoritative Church teachings you can find a very clear and definitive statement in the Council of Trent. The Catechism of the Council of Trent expands upon these teachings.

Question:

This is my thesis in the works:

Receiving the very Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus the Christ, Son of God, in the Most Holy Eucharist after knowingly rejecting Him through an act of mortal sin is a grave and everlasting offense to this same Son and to His Father and Holy Spirit.

Now my question regards the bold.

Is it His Holy Spirit or the Holy Spirit?

The capital H in "He" when referencing God is optional, but I and many others find it preferable because it makes it more clear that He is God.

The t in "the" is never capitalized except at the beginning of a sentence, I believe, but no, it shouldn't be capitalized here.

As for the thesis statement, I would remove "everlasting," as it gives the impression that it can't be forgiven.

Not exactly what I was asking. Sorry. Thanks anyways.

What I meant was: Is the Holy Spirit 'His (Jesus's) Holy Spirit' or just 'the Holy Spirit'?

Yeah. I was thinking about doing that...
