Jaime Posted February 1, 2008 Author Posted February 1, 2008 Actually I've trained him not to herd people. But I like the joke
Deb Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 You should feel sheepish about telling that joke......... SO, how does one train a herding dog to not herd people? Will the dog herd any animal, like if it saw a bunch of cows hanging out or a flock of geese walking around at the lake?
Jaime Posted February 1, 2008 Author Posted February 1, 2008 well herding is instinctual so when I take him for walks, I stop him from circling and make him walk like any other dog. (That was a tough one) And he will herd anything if I tell him to herd it. He knows (he's learning) that he's only allowed to herd on command. Oh and I'm incorporating lesser known theologian names for herding commands. It drives the instructor crazy.
Deb Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 That sounds like so much fun. A lot more fun than a regular dog. Would he freak out if you took him to the state fair or something where there would literally be herds of people? That might be painful to have to tamper his herding instinct in a situation like that. Most of the people I know would be easy to herd. Lifetime of practice. Your poor instructors. Hmm, I guess I never knew there were instructors for that.

IcePrincessKRS Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008
why buy sheep when we have alpaca?
I guess that would work, too, since he said Kodiak will herd anything.
Then I found out that a lamb becomes a sheep one it is a year and a day old. Which means that when people eat lamb, they are eating a little baby animal! Someday I will go back and liberate all the sheep in Ireland and Scotland.
But lamb is SO good. Leg of Lamb....

jeffpugh Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Keeep yer mits off This be hot stuff's thread. I'm not his advocate
Deb Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 I have never eaten it and don't think I ever could. Traveling on a tour in Scotland and Ireland last year and I swear it was a choice all the time. I just cringed. Jaimie, would you teach Kodiak to herd all the lambies away from their farms?

jeffpugh Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Whoa! That picture's widescreen Oh, and I am with Deb here... how does that work? I know they're a herd-mentality animal, but doesn't a bull usually lead the group?

IcePrincessKRS Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 There's nothing as delicious as leg of lamb for Easter dinner. hot stuff, I'll have to share my recipe with you.

If you ever want to try something different you could do this Its a bit of a challenge because crocodiles don't herd very well. But Kodie really seems to like it
