Ash Wednesday Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 You know, I have an appointment booked with someone in London for a consultation -- right now the tentative plan is to just have a dress custom made. A lot of dresses out there are just, well, not really my thing. It's going to be really expensive, and I feel guilty or weird spending all this money on a dress I will probably only wear once or twice (at the wedding, and the u.s. reception.) I'm just one of those people that doesn't spend a lot on clothes normally, and I'm used to wearing what clothes I have to shreds. I'm a real pragmatist that way. What say you? Do I just stick with the plan, or take a risk and cancel the appointment and just hope that I find something cheaper but that I can be reasonably happy with? I'm just worried about finding a dress that I like within the five months that I will have up until the wedding. And white is just always a tricky color because if you don't have the right dress and fabric, you're going to look washed out and fat. I want to look nice -- I know if I just do the custom route it will be amazing and just exactly what I want. But this nagging voice keeps telling me I could spend that money on the honeymoon. Or furniture.
T-Bone _ Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 A wedding dress is an heirloom that you can pass down to your children/grandchildren/etc.
Ash Wednesday Posted March 28, 2008 Author Posted March 28, 2008 Awww.. you made me misty eyed I was thinking of that.... I do tell myself that if I go ahead and spend the extra money it's for something special. I just hear nightmare stories about people that spend all this money on weddings and then get divorced because they end up broke.
IcePrincessKRS Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 If you know you won't be happy with anything less then spend the extra money and have it custom made. I was lucky enough to find my perfect dress the relatively cheap way--David's bridal haha--but not everyone has a cheaper option a short drive away. (And not everyone who does finds their perfect dress there.) If you still feel really uneasy about it look around at a couple more boutiques, if you're still not happy with what they have at least you gave it a shot. In the end you'll probably be happier for spending the extra anyway. lol Also, T-Bone said it'll be an heirloom, your daughters and granddaughters may want to wear it one day. I would have loved to wear my grandmother's or mother's dress but Grandma was fairly larger than I was, and I don't know what happened to Mom's dress but it was a tad.... late 70's early 80's... not my thing. Matt even suggested I wear his mother's dress--one of his sisters in law had worn it a few years previous--but location and sizing were an issue.
Ash Wednesday Posted March 28, 2008 Author Posted March 28, 2008 How long did it take you to find a dress? How much time should someone allow? Anyone can answer this btw!
Ash Wednesday Posted March 28, 2008 Author Posted March 28, 2008 I guess also on the other hand I can guarantee looking like a star for at least a day or two out of my life at 32....before it all goes downhill and I get saggy and grey.
IcePrincessKRS Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 I confess... I found my dress within a few hours of shopping. I had friends who visited several boutiques. Found their dress. Went in to try it on again and place the purchase order and changed their minds 2 or 3 times before settling on an entirely different dress than the original one. I think how long it takes it really depends on the person. I tend to be quite decisive. lol
Ash Wednesday Posted March 28, 2008 Author Posted March 28, 2008 Well I'm just so flipping anal retentive I'm probably just going to stay with the custom route. I've been trolling for dresses and I'm always finding something I don't like about each one. Wrong color, too much lace, don't like strapless, too many ruffles, looks like a big wedding cake, etc. I don't know why I suddenly started freaking out about it all just this evening. I'll try to diffuse the anxiety by reminding myself that I don't have any bridesmaids and my maid of honor is going to wear her own dress. I just told her to try to wear crimson.
Paladin D Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 You're getting married!? When did this happen!? I either missed it, or have a very short memory. Congratulations!!!
dUSt Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 I think what we really need to be worrying about is why so many people are up so early posting on an internet message board. L-O-S-E-R-S.
