John Kerry Receives Communion At Papal Mass

From the AP:

A number of lawmakers who support abortion rights attended the Mass, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. John Kerry, the former Democratic presidential candidate. During the 2004 campaign, several bishops questioned whether Kerry should receive Communion because of his stand on abortion. The Massachusetts Democrat took Communion from a priest far from the papal altar.

I suppose we can give the benefit of the doubt to the priest or deacon that gave him Holy Communion; perhaps he wasn't paying that close attention...however unlikely that sounds.

when will Catholic lawmakers learn that integrity should not be sacrificed to win votes?

also, the link doesn't work.

I kinda wish he had tried to take communion right near the Pope, so Papa Benedict would've laid the smack-down on carp like that!

I'm not sure benedict would have recognized him?

Quite possible. Though I seem to remember an American group giving him a list w/ the pictures of high profile Catholics who are pro-abortion so he would know. I'll have to find that, though.

Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

While I understand the sentiments on this thread, it would be difficult even for the Pope to deny him communion unless he is excommunicated. I doudt even the Pope would have had they come up in his line. There is no way of knowing if he has been to confession and repented that day (I am sure they had priests doing confessoin) or that week as they did when I went to a papal Mass in Denver. However sad the sacralidge of our Lord's body and blood are we must remember that that is between Mr. Kerry and Ms. Pelosi and God. God help their souls. I am in favor of them being excommunicated however.

To confess though and for the confession to be valid, wouldn't they have to have a firm amendment to never commit that sin again? If that was the case then wouldn't they have to change their political position on abortion after Confession?

Pelosi has already practically said she does not think that her stance on abortion is sinful enough to not take Communion. She said she took Communion from Pope John Paul II when he last came, and that has given her an affirmation that she can take Communion. From her comments on Communion she does not seem to believe in the Eucharist. She holds that it is a "communal meal" and that about sums it up. Very sad. :weep: :sign:

Interesting that they would choose to not take Communion from the Holy Father or that someone else would choose that for them. I think that says something.

I was slightly impressed that apparently Ted Kennedy didn't present himself for communion.

I'm very impressed. At least he showed a modicum of respect.
