homeschoolmom Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Now that you bring up the subject of tips... (this is not specific to Starbucks)... Why am I expected to give a tip for the person who rings up my coffee or the person who takes a minute to prepare it? I don't tip the guy at Arby's who makes my roast beef. I don't tip the gal at Walgreens who rings up my random purchaes. Why coffee places?

There are tip jars for everyone now. Arby's has a policy against it, I think or else you would have that jar out there. It's actually genius of companies because the employees' pay can be supplemneted by tips thus allowing for lower paid wages or low pay increases. Edited July 10, 2008 by socalscout

Tipping expresses gratitude for the work they put into making your drink. Of course, if it's a place that just slops it together with no care, then you wouldn't tip Edited July 10, 2008 by LouisvilleFan
LouisvilleFan Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 (edited)
$4 doesn't seem expensive for a cup of coffee, most coffee places down here sell their coffees for around that price, unless if you're buying from somewhere like McDonalds or apetrol station.
You're obviously not talking about regular brewed coffee. For that, Starbucks only costs about 50 cents more than McDonald's. I don't know where people get the idea that it's so expensive.
I guess the part of my statement that I should have stressed was not the "$4 a cup," but rather the "everyone on the planet." It's a common mistake companies make-- too much growth, too quickly.
Well, I hate being a canon lawyer about this, but the $4 a cup thing simply isn't true. "Five dollar coffee" is catchy and I guess the press has spread that phrase, but I've been to Starbucks plenty of times and usually drop two dollars, including the tip. I really enjoy delicious brewed coffee... no need to sweeten it up with whipped cream and milk. Edited July 10, 2008 by LouisvilleFan
Winchester Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I tip because I once worked in the food service industry (I don't think it's really an industry, but everyone calls it that so I'm going to as well) and I have empathy for the people behind the counter. Typically, even the rude or merely robotic ones. They so often don't get treated human and a buck in the tip jar helps morale, even if only a little bit. But it doesn't count if they don't see it.

Like many booming companies, it appears Starbucks has made the mistake of growing too quickly. The price of the coffee is not the point. The growth of the company is.

Why does starbucks feel the need to put their name on everything coffee related (coffeemakers, coffee cups, french presses, expresso machines...) They should have just stuck to making a delicious drink rather than expanding to all of these products. But for the record, I LOVE my starbucks, and I'm drinking a $4.60 frappucino... and it's worth every penny

It's a fun game sometimes. Or dumping several coins in there very loudly...
Okay... you are still missing my point.
