salterrae Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 JM + JT Wait 'til after Saturday. A few of us need some last minute, long-awaited absolution.
CatherineM Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Didymus-I heard the story repeatedly at the VFW that guys were discharged there starting in WWII. The Army processed them at the Presidio, and the Navy at Treasure Island. The Navy Hospital there even conducted testing on them at the time. Their paperwork would be stamped with a big blue H, and they would be given clothes to go home in that would disgrace them further. Here's a LINK to a story about California during the war years that has a blurb down the page on it. To be sent home, dishonorably discharged for being gay, during the 40's when everyone was serving, was just too hard. They stayed in Frisco, and their folks could pretend they had died overseas, or was missing or something to save face.
N/A Gone Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Great...I fly into San Fran on August 1st. (no worries, I head to San Jose) I think I should wear my "Catholic Ninja" shirt for the flight.
Selah Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 What is it with California lately? Jeez. Sending prayers up...
Excelsior1027 Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Fr. Z. had an interesting thing to say when he covered this story on his blog today: "Another step toward what we know must eventually come." And really, he's right. Jesus told us we were going to be persecuted; so should we really be all that surprised? I mean, yes, I'm just as furious about this as everyone else, we live in a country that is supposed to protect its citizens (ALL its citizens) from this kind of carp. Just remember, though, this is what inevitably happens to us because we've chosen to follow Jesus.

LouisvilleFan Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008
This is all the US Army's fault. San Fransisco is where they used to discharge guys getting booted from the military for being gay, and a lot of them felt like they couldn't go home after being dishonorably discharged for being gay, so they stayed there in town. The church should sue the Army.
Interesting how homophobia within the military (which was simply a manifestation of homophobia through culture at that time) lead to the creation of a city that stands for the homosexual lifestyle and "leads the way" in promoting the GLBT agenda. This is why we should embrace and love all people rather than casting them out. Everyone would be happier and more fulfilled that way.
LouisvilleFan Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Just to be sure, there are many faithful Catholics in San Francisco. One of the city's most beautiful and notable landmarks, Sts. Peter and Paul Church, is as orthodox a parish as one can find (pretty sure it's a Salesian parish... usually the most orthodox parishes in any city belong to religious orders). When I attended a daily Mass at the Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, one of the points the priest made was St. Francis' complete loyalty to the Church (ironically, he was a diocesan priest, but naturally assigned to a shrine instead of a parish). But at any rate, a strong orthodox witness is undoubtedly there in the city, so any of us who went there wouldn't be alone. Of course, their witness is probably why the City Board condemned the Catholic Church
EstoVir_TheWay_4 Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 I wonder where this San Fanciscan boad recieved their information on The "Catholic church's moral teachings on homosexuality." How can they accuse the Church of "hateful and discriminatory rhetoric" against homosexuals? At no time has The Catholic Church stated anything which could be taken as hurtful towards any person. The Church stands against sin, but loves sinners just as Jesus loved sinners. These people are taking offense by ascociating action with being. Not to debate, but the Church describes homosexuality as "disordered" just as alcoholism is considered "disordered." This discussion is found in numerous places on phatmass. I admit, I'm a little burned by the ignorance of a board which claims to represent a whole city of people. Justin86 Posted July 17, 2008 Author Posted July 17, 2008 I'm all for taking leave and meeting up in San Fran for some good Catholic chant outside City Hall.
Thy Geekdom Come Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008
Resolution 168-08, passed unanimously by the City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors two years ago, also accused the Vatican of being a "foreign country" meddling with and attempting to "negatively influence (San Francisco's) existing and established customs."
We tried to influence their already existing and established customs? What are they talking about...the Catholic Church FOUNDED San Francisco!!!
It said of the church's teaching on homosexuality, "Such hateful and discriminatory rhetoric is both insulting and callous, and shows a level of insensitivity and ignorance which has seldom been encountered by this Board of Supervisors."
Obviously, the Board of Supervisors wasn't well-catechized. To their ears, we have things that would seem far more insensitive...sin...God...chastity...tru h...
... The resolution also took a shot at Levada, the former archbishop of San Francisco, saying, "Cardinal Levada is a decidedly unqualified representative of his former home city, and of the people of San Francisco and the values they hold dear."
Well, it's a darn good thing he's not representing San Francisco, isn't it?
The anti-Catholic diatribe had previously been challenged in U.S. District Court on similar grounds, but District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel ruled in favor of the city, saying, in essence, the church started it. She wrote in her decision, "The Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith provoked this debate, indeed may have invited entanglement" for instructing Catholic politicians on how to vote. "This court does not find that our case law requires political bodies to remain silent in the face of provocation."
The Church's teaching on homosexuality has been around far longer than San Francisco. San Fran sinned. That means they started it.
The cultural, and now political, straight-arm to adherents of the Christian faith in San Francisco has been increasingly public in the last two years. Just one week after the anti-Catholic resolution was passed, the San Francisco Board issued a similar resolution against a mostly evangelical group. Following a gathering of 25,000 teens at San Francisco's AT&T Park as part of Ron Luce's Teen Mania "Battle Cry for a Generation" rally against the sexualization of America's youth culture by advertisers and media, the board spoke out formally again. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution condemning the "act of provocation" by what it termed an "anti-gay," "anti-choice" organization that aimed to "negatively influence the politics of America's most tolerant and progressive city."
Ah, yes...and there's the rub...they're trying to be "progressive." Forget trying to be true, faithful, reasonable, etc., "progressive" is the way to be...and by "progressive" we mean whatever we want it to mean, because the future is what we make it, and progress gets us to the future.
Openly gay California Assemblyman Mark Leno told protesters of the teen rally that though such religious people may be few, "they're loud, they're obnoxious, they're disgusting, and they should get out of San Francisco." The Chronicle also reported on a San Francisco protester against the evangelical youth rally carrying a sign that may sum up the sentiment: "I moved here to get away from people like you."
It's so nice to see the responsible, mature response coming from the leaders of San Francisco. I'm sure when all those teens left, they were discussing the calm civility and appropriate response they received from their adult role models in San Francisco.
pan!c139 Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 I'll bring the mob, you guys bring the signs!!! Mwhahaha watch out SF!!!
Deb Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 This is just another brick in the wall. Everything that is happening here and in Europe is just leading up to the return of our Lord. I pray to him every day to hurry back. Mary hasn't been converting souls the last 26 years in Medjugorje for nothing. She is trying to get as many people to her son while there is still time. I cannot see how these dorks could win in court. I don't think California should be getting any more federal tax dollars at all if this is what they do in their cities. Does the entire state think like this? Why aren't the Catholics in that state up in arms and making noise? This is what happens as everyone quietly sits by and watches. Catholics are the single largest group of faith in this country at 68 million. Why can't we organize. No more tourism from Catholics to San Francisco would be a start. How do we mobilize?
Daniel9 Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Being "politically correct" is rapidly becoming mandatory. The issue of what government deems "hateful" is going to become a big problem, I think.
Maggyie Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Let me take the opportunity to officially condemn the San Francsico board.
Balthazor Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Guys.... What else is new? So Chrisitanity is condemned again. Didn't it start as a condemned marginalized religion? The Truth will not die, God will not die, We will not die. This is one more opportunity to react with Grace. We are blessed to have the opportunity to react in Grace and show the love of God.
