Era Might Posted August 1, 2009 Author Posted August 1, 2009
Wow, very impressive!!!!! Please if you would kindly talk about your eating and exercise habits, lots of us could use encouragement.
My method is probably not a good example for most people. I've basically developed a monastic discipline for eating. In the morning I eat a small bowl of cereal and a banana. Then I don't eat anything for the rest of the day except fruit. I drink only water. I don't eat any snacks. I don't even chew gum. That's largely for psychological reasons. I only like to eat at meal times. If I'm chewing gum or eating a snack, psychologically it feels like I'm weakening my discipline. The other important thing has been keeping busy. I'm too busy at school during weekdays to think about food. I eat (a properly portioned) dinner at night, just before I go to bed, so that I don't have time at night to think about food after I eat. This is more difficult during the weekends, because I don't have school to keep my mind off food. Some times are easier than others. Sometimes when I'm really hungry, I just have to grit my teeth and be satisfied with my scheduled meals and portions. But sometimes I have to force myself to eat, because I get into a zone. I've learned to sort of feed off hunger. When I'm hungry, it clears my mind and makes me more able to think and use my intellect and to be spiritually alert. I use that to my advantage. As far as exercise, I go to the gym for 1.5 hours when I'm able. But during the week I usually don't have time, so I try to walk when I can. For example, I used to take the bus home, but now I walk, which gives me about 20 minutes exercise. So I would say that the most important things for me have been controlling when and how much I eat (I don't count calories or avoid certain foods, I just control how much I eat), exercising regularly, and keeping busy. And I've also learned not to take failures too seriously. Sometimes I get off my diet for a few days or a week. I used to look at that as though I had completely negated what I did before. But now I just take it as a detour, and get back on track. It's really about a lifestyle change. When I first started, I was driven by the desire to lose weight. But now my body can't handle too much food. My mind and stomach have become accustomed to discipline. But an important thing is that I allow myself to eat a bigger portion for Sunday dinner, and I allow myself a dessert on Sunday. So during the week, when I'm tempted to eat something I shouldn't eat, I just think about how much I will enjoy eating dessert on Sunday knowing that I was disciplined for that entire week. You have to reward yourself. Discipline is important, but you have to relax once in a while. Otherwise the discipline becomes too burdensome, and you'll want to give up altogether.

Now I just pay really close attention to how my body feels-hungry, full, etc. Anyone else expereince this?

When it happens to me, I'll stop losing weight for days and weeks on end. I'll also feel more tired then usual. One time I was eating really, really low amounts of calories (though not really on purpose) and started experiencing it. I started eating more and BAM magically lost weight.
princessgianna Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Walk and exercise for an hour is a must tomorrow. With my birthday I have been enjoying food. though got on the scale today- that fun will come to a screeching halt.
Saint Therese Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 (edited) Today I saw a former coworker. He didn't recognize me. he had to ask his wife who I was, because I've lost so much weight. And, I think I might be a diabetic. I don't understand why this is happening now, after I've lost so much weight. Edited August 17, 2009 by Saint Therese
InHisLove726 Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I've been on the Alli pill since March and lost 15 pounds so far. I cut back drastically on sugar recently, which seems to have really helped a great deal. I only drink diet beverages and tea. No more sugary coke (except for once in a while as a treat). I really need to lay off the and fries, though.
It has to do with your metabolism. The more you eat and exercise, the more calories your body burns. I know sometimes it doesn't make sense to eat less and gain weight, but if that's what's happening, your metabolism has slowed down.
littleflower+JMJ Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I need to get back on this bandwagon! I need it!
CatherineM Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I have to eat a certain number of calories everyday, or I don't lose weight at all. More when I'm exercising heavy.

Working on gaining it this year, because it's getting to the point of unhealthiness. Actually if my BMI was 0.5 lower it would be in anorexic range (I'm not, by the way).
