“This is the last year that President Bush could consider giving a commutation to John Walker Lindh, and there are very good reasons to do that,” attorney Jim Brosnahan said at a news conference today in San Francisco. “I’ve never eliminated the idea that President Bush might think it’s the right thing to do, now that John has served seven years.”

Raj Chatterjee, another of Lindh’s attorneys, said others detained and/or charged in the “War on Terror” under similar or more serious circumstances have been released after serving less time. “There’s a fundamental principle of U.S. jurisprudence, and that is that prison sentences must be fair and similar cases should be treated similarly,” he said. “It has become abundantly clear that John has been treated differently.”…

Frank Lindh said they’re still pinning all hopes on Bush because the events transpired during his Administration, rather than waiting for Barack Obama to become president. Bush initially had referred to Lindh as a “poor fellow” who “has been misled,” but later supported his prosecution.
so his sentence was trimmed from life to 17 years, and they want it to be reduced or let him out because he's served a whole 7 years. i don't think so.
refresh my memory, who is this guy?
He's an American who was captured during the invasion into Afghanistan because he had been serving in the Taliban army.

Al Quaida, not Taliban.

I don't know. I'm sick of hearing about his youth. This isin't some 14 year old Palistinian kid who joins Hammas after his family was killed or a Chechen kid who fought the Russians, this guy was a bit older than me when the Cole was blown up. He was raised in a conftorable home away from any danger. He was a legal adult, he has to be responsible for his actions. It's no ones fault but his own if he got wrapped up in some romantic fantasy about muhajadine. He joined a group that regularly targets civilians, he was not fighting for his country or his people. The one possible exception is there was some evidence he was tortured or his confession was coerced. If that is true he nees to be freed, but if not then let him serve his time

I remember when the stories about this kid first came out. I remember reading a story that even though he was baptized Catholic, his parents didn't want to influence his religious beliefs. I found that very strange. Then during his most difficult teenage years, his parents broke up and his dad moved in with a boyfriend.

A lot of teenagers or young adults want to get their parent's attention, he sure found a dramatic way to do it.

I don't think his problems are just atributed to parent's attention. I think he also became infatuated with Black culture and rap before Islam (via Malcome X).

I recently read a journal article for a media bias analysis class about the affinity with Islamic/arab culture as part of counter culture and rebellion (this is historic, Islam has often been used as a metaphore in populace movements) . I just thought of him when I read it.

Again, he was older than I am now when the Cole was blown up. He knew what he was doing and there is no evidence he was forced to remain.

I wasn't so much thinking about his need for attention, but a lack of parental direction in his life when he needed it the most.
In Afghanistan, I remind you, Jihad Johnny took up arms with the terrorists. His purpose was to kill Americans and his “reserve of will” accomplished the goal. He told the feds he trained with al Qaeda before the September 11 attacks and he fought alongside them after Osama bin Laden’s henchmen murdered 3,000 of Lindh’s fellow citizens on American soil. He wrote a letter to his mother expressing support for the U.S.S. Cole bombing that took 17 sailors’ lives and, despite an emphatic denial by Lindh’s father that Jihad Johnny took up arms against his country, he recounted how his rifle malfunctioned on the front lines in Takar.

Finally, on Nov. 25, 2001, upon being captured and taken to the Qala I Jangi fortress outside Mazar E Shiref for interrogation, Suleyman al-Faris/Abdul Hamid/John Walker Lindh sat silent — and deliberately and defiantly chose not to tell American CIA officer and former Marine Corps artillery specialist Mike Spann about a planned Taliban prison revolt. Spann was killed in the riot.
