MissyP89
I dunno, as a disabled person I was not personally offended by what he said--I've learned over the years to not let such shallow, condescending comments offend me. I understand that people can slip up--Lord knows I have, and am still working on that. However, he is a public speaker and the head representative of this country. He should be beyond this sort of thing.

littleflower+JMJ
I think his words are revealing what kind of person he is and what his true thoughts and values are. If he thinks of the SO people are notworthy of any skills, what is he truly thinking about anyone else he thinks lower of? We already know he views infants and the unborn as punishment. I think this is a lot deeper than we realize. Shame on him for saying such a thing! It was wrong and hurtful. Also, I agree with Tradmom. How about we start standing up for the dignity of human beings, in this case those in the SO? In case you haven't noticed, its being trampled on. From the top. There's something wrong with we are so desensitized when we see some one disgraced on national TV and think nothing of it. Its part of the reason why the culture of death (abortion, euthanasia, etc.) are slowly becoming more certain for the future.

It was one of the things that severely dampened the Republicans' enthusiasm for him. That and the fact that he was never a viable candidate in the first place. But it didn't help when he went on chat shows looking absurd.

Ash Wednesday
I don't think he meant to be deliberately insulting -- he just wasn't thinking. But I'm not going to pity or defend someone that's that stupid. If this was Tom Green, Johnny Knoxville or some average Joe making a wry quip like that, people probably wouldn't be making it an issue. But when you're the President of the United States, the bar is raised as far as how heavily you are scrutinized and what is expected of you and the things you say. Some people are genuinely offended. The cynic in me suspects that some of Obama's opponents in political circles are probably more concerned about political opportunism rather than genuine moral outrage. One thing's for sure: Obama's all smoke and mirrors, no substance, and a verbal buffoon without his teleprompter.

KnightofChrist
I don't think Obama thought before he spoke. Commonly when people crack jokes about the Special Olympics the butt of the joke is the mentally handicap. That is very likely the case here, Obama was saying that he bowled like a person who is Mentally disabled. On the plus side, Mentally disabled bowling star: 'I can beat the president!'... Edited March 21, 2009 by KnightofChrist

Lilllabettt
So ... President Obama made the stupid mistake of going on the Tonight Show. Then he foolishly tried to be funny, and in the process cracked an insensitive joke. I've watched the video, and it's pretty apparent it was a thoughtless remark ie., he did not willfully insult the disabled. Once he realized his error, he said he was sorry. If I know politicians, and I think I do, then probably in the near future there will be a bunch of Special Olympics athletes invited to the White House, and they will have a bowling game with the President, and whip him handily, and there will be a nice photo op and maybe a giant check donation. Exactly where is the tragedy here? Since when do careless words reveal or define who we really are? They don't right? It's the choices we make, not the "accidents" we have. I really doubt that President Obama deliberately chose to insult the disabled. And he admitted he was wrong and apologized! It's not like he said "so what?" Comparing this to the President's position on abortion is way wrong, I think. He definitely makes choices which disrespect the unborn, and then defends those choices.
