MissyP89
I, for one, agree with HCF on this. Mass made no sense to me at all as a little girl; to have someone explain it to me in a way I could understand would have been very beneficial. As to who is reading the Gospel...I know it matters in the confines of the Mass, but at a Scripture study for children? I don't think it makes a difference--it would be no different if I were a mother reading from the Gospels to my young children. It doesn't cause that much of a disruption, IMO. At my parish, it takes a grand total of two minutes to get two dozen little ones down to the front and into the chapel. That Mass is more crowded than any other at my parish because the children are active and involved in a way that is engaging for them. If it bothers people--I for one prefer something a little more low-key--then other Masses are available.

No cars in church!
lol They are usually little toy matchbox cars, not remote control cars of course, but common sense should tell the parents "hey, so and so, don't put your car on the wall." I've actually had to tell a few little ones not to do that because their parents would not do anything. I felt bad for stepping in, but I work their and have some authority over maintaining the property. I wouldn't be so bothered by it if it was a separate room for the cry room, but there is not a cry room. Part of the Narthex of the Church is designated for families with small children. So I mean it's the first thing you see when you walk inside the Church so you don't really want to see huge scratches in the paint.

I never went to children's liturgy and I understood what was going on because my parents instructed me in what was going on. And I was always able to ask questions quietly to my parents during Mass if there was something I didn't understand. Also it would be beneficial for the parents to go home and explain the readings to their children after Mass, if there is something the children did not understand. Even when children are removed from the main body of the Church for Children's Liturgy they are still attending the Mass, which means a priest or deacon should be proclaiming the Gospel to them. I mean, seriously, if a non-ordained person is proclaiming the Gospel to them in the context that they are their attending Sunday Mass then it could cause great confusion later for them when someone tries to explain to them that only the ordained may proclaim the Gospel at Mass. It has taken also 6 months for my PSR kids to understand that only the ordained can proclaim the Gospel at Mass because they are so used to Mrs. so and so proclaiming it to them in children's liturgy. Maybe they should make a rule - books only or something.

CatherineM
5 1/2 million dollars, and no cry room? Was the general contractor the head of the parish council? That's what happened at the church I grew up in. We had always rented the gym at a neighboring Disciples church because we didn't have our own. When they finally got the money to build a gym when I was in college, the head of the PC handled it, and the gym ended up not being regulation. We could practice it in, but no games, therefore no gate $. Too bad Mike Holmes doesn't do churches.

The Church is absolutely beautiful though and the Narthex makes a pretty good cry room and at least they put in windows so that those out there could see what was taking place during Mass. Our church is all beams, and it makes cracking noises when the wind blows kind of like an old sailing ship. It's pretty, but they don't make swiffer dusters with 60' extensions. eagle_eye222001
Once my mom let me bring cars to church. Then once for some reason we went to a church with a sloped incline. You can guess what happened during one of the readings. My parents never let me bring cars again. ---------------- Listening to: Green Day - She's A Rebel via FoxyTunes

I think that's probably why there are things like Children's Liturgy of the Word, now. It's either take the kids out or have them playing with cars and dolls and coloring and not paying attention at all anyway, because their parents won't make them (which I find more disruptive than the minute it takes for the kids to leave, and at my parish, when they come back, it's during offertory, when they have the kids bring their envelopes to the front, anyway). I'm not sure if I necessarily agree with CLOW, but I personally can't come up with any better options.
