franciscanheart
I think you should think about the difference between Medieval custom and today's custom. Many couples are going to a hotel or traveling on a plane after their wedding. It would be kinda weird having a priest come with you to your hotel room to bless the hotel bed lol or fly with you to your honeymoon destination to bless the bed there. Many people no longer stay at home for their honeymoons, which they did during Medieval ages. I think the practicality of the entire matter should be taken into account.
I would think they would have the blessing at home and stay there for the consummation. I know a couple who went away for a while to Europe before consummating their marriage. It was consummated at home some time after their trip home.
My wife and I would obviously stay at our new home one night before we went on our honeymoon.
That's what I was thinking.
It's a great thread!
sure is.
This blessing reminds me of what famous chastity speaker Jason Evert said about when he married his wife. They didn't have a traditional blessing with a priest but he and his wife prayed the "Prayer of Tobius" that is found in Sacred Scripture where Tobius says a prayer with his wife before consumating their vows.
That's an awesome idea too! Love that. I like this idea of a bed blessing. The only thing that made me slightly uncomfortable reading was when the couple got IN the bed and then the priest sprinkled water on them. That's kinda awkward for me. Of course, it's not like the couple would be in their undies...

franciscanheart
If you read the thread I posted, you will see that I point out the impracticality of having a blessed bed.
is this what you're talking about:
But if the bed is blessed, then you can't really get rid of it to get a new one, right? I mean, you could bury it, I guess. Imagine this scenario: Elderly couple is out in the backyard digging a very large hole... Neighbor: Hey, whacha doin'? You planning to bury someone? hehe... Husband: No. We're just planning to properly dispose of our blessed marital bed. Neighbor: What the-- ? Wife: Yes. You see, when we were married, we had our marriage bed blessed. We needed to get a new mattress (Sean's back is getting bad, you know) and the proper way to dispose of such objects is to burn them or bury them. And well, the fire regulations in this city won't allow for such a large fire... Husband: Yeah. Hey, would you mind giving me a hand carrying "Old Faithful" out here to the backyard? Neighbor: <walks away> Crazy Catholics...

DominicanPhilosophy
This is really neat! However, I don't think I'd be comfortable doing the whole getting in bed part while the priest sprinkles me and my husband with Holy Water. That's just me, though, and I think, like others have said, it may just be a cultural norm that most people would have trouble seeing past (and you're not one of those people, which is awesome!). If I ever get married, though, I would definitely make sure our home is blessed and stuff, though. +JMJD
