Lil Red Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009
For me its not size but that I look 10 years younger than I am. So everyone treats me like a child. I work at a university and when staff don't know me they as what HS or Middle school I'm from and what I'd like to do with my life. *punch you in the face* is what I want to say, but I have to smile and be polite. And please don't patronize me with the "you'll like it when you're older" beucase I've heard that way too much. My mom and dad and brothers look young, and no one ever knows we're a family. My dad's grown out of despising it and my mom mostly enjoys it but as they approach retirement they both acknowledge it'd be nice not to have people think that they're their friend's children when they go out. And then no matter what group I'm in I become the "kid". I really. really hate it.
+J.M.J.+ I totally feel you. especially the "you'll like it when you're older" part.
haha Same here. I have people who are afraid to ask how old I am when they see me out with my kids because they think I look younger than I am.
VeniteAdoremus Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Grmbl. The last time someone thought I was twenty was when I was fourteen. Can we switch? I used to have a friend with curly hair. She really wanted straight hair. I really wanted curly hair. We both thought it distinctly unfair (and we thought the other was an idiot, obviously ). Doesn't help that both my siblings have really curly hair!

Can we switch?
I had the same problem. When I was young, I looked older because of how tall I was. I used to have to pay adult fees at the public pool and movies years before I should have had to. Now, people don't believe I am as old as I am. I've got a husband with gray hair that sometimes people mistake for my dad.
IcePrincessKRS Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 If I had a nickel for every time I caught someone looking at me when it seems like they're trying to do the math to figure out how old I must have been when I had my first child I'd be rich. It's not that I really mind looking younger so much, but that I hate having to tell people over and over "Yes, these are all my kids. Yes, I'm old enough to be their mother. No, I'm not 20. I'm pushing 30." It's just annoying because I frequently think that they're trying to figure out which of my babies were born while I was in high school (when really I'd already graduated with my BA and was married when we conceived our first).

There are probably many women who are envious of you.

BG45 Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 My self image problems are purely psychological I think. I'm just used to people talking down to me all the time at work, and being told how fat and worthless I am (sometimes in so many words, often not) by a certain family member.
Faith 1st Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 I have felt a little better about self image I think.... I have lost about 20lbs. since Knightec and I went our different ways... I started running to try to get my frustration out. I feel a little better but I have had to buy new clothes. You would think that would be a good thing. I do feel healthier but sometimes I feel like I should be running ALL day!

And my husband is significantly older than I am (12.5 years) and we occasionally get odd looks when we're out because I look probably 15-20 years younger than him, especially when he's tired. I don't have Icey's problem though, I don't think. I no longer look fresh out of high school.

You have to be 18 to buy brake fluid in Florida because it can be used to make meth. The clerk did a serious double take.

Lilllabettt Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 It's interesting. Before, when I was in high school and college, I felt like I was ugly and incompetant. Since I got sick, was booted from the convent, had surgery etc., things have changed. I realized it in the hospital, when they had all this pre-operative counseling ... (apparently some people get depressed because its a negative for their body image) ... they said: "after the operation is a period of mourning," and I said "whose dead?" I realized I didn't care what people thought of me anymore. Which is fairly major for me. So now I have to thank God for letting me go through all this hassle, if that's what it took to heal me from that other stuff. He's amazing.
