Latest Case Of Absurd Secular Intolerance

Duke Amachree, a homelessness worker for Wandsworth Council, was suspended from his job in January because he had suggested to a woman with an incurable illness who was being evicted from her home that she might try putting her faith in God. He was told in an investigatory interview in March that "God had to be kept out of the workplace". He asked whether it would be appropriate to say "God bless" and was told that it would not. On Monday he was sacked.

FULL STORY HERE

The Christian Legal Centre is representing Mr Amchree who is taking Wandsworth Council to an employment tribunal. This is the latest in a series of recent cases. Some may be won, some lost, who knows? The effect of them on ordinary employers and employees will be one of intimidation. Whatever the legal outcome of the various appeals, the message is getting across that you dare not express your Christian faith at work, or allow your employees to do so. If there were a massive damages award against an employer for this sort of thing, it would help, but in the present climate of opinion in secular Britain, I don't hold out too much hope for that. The Dictatorship of Relativism is gathering pace in Britain.

Perhaps the terminally ill woman had no faith and found this offensive. Some Christians who preach publically can come across as quite manipulative and even hostile, and I think there should be more tact involved when trying to promote your religious beliefs, especially in the workplace.

It can be difficult to respond with tact when we are often not allowed to even divulge that we are in fact Christian in the work place.

You must not be from the US if you've never heard about this. Either that, or you live in a cave somewhere. Must get good wifi reception.

Well I've never heard of someone getting the sack for saying they are a Christian or for being Christian. Any sources?

And I found it totally offensive when my brother in law came over to my house and told me about ten times what an idiot I was for believing in God. He would then further his cause by suggesting my potential could be better me if I take God out of my life. He also verbally wondered how God could have created that thing in the house (which happened to be my daughter he was referring to) who was born with a birth defect. Was my brother in law manipulative? YES! Hostile? YES! And I hardly think calling my beautiful daughter a thing showed much tact. He did little to promote your cause.

What's this got to do with religion in the workplace?

Not only can we not divulge our faith in the work place, but apparently we are not even safe in our own homes. As a mom, my home is my work place. It is no secret we are a Catholic family (the whole family is Catholic except him), why would he not be tolerant of my values and faith in my own home? If he would have told me his beliefs once, that would have been fine. I know where he stands. But to call me an idiot (his words) and my daughter a thing (please!), that is where I draw the line. So yes, it is relevant.

Not really. This thread is investigating the issue of religion in the formal workplace. I don't know much about your brother in law, but if anyone attacked my beliefs and referred to family members as "things" they would not be welcome in my house. It would probably be best for you and your daughter to avoid contact with this person altogether. And he doesn't represent atheism (nothing really does), just like peadophile priests don't represent Christianity.

There were literally too many references to site them all. Besides, it happens so often that you either never read the news, or are just trying to be difficult. In either case, I have more important things to do.
