CatherineM
I've got an article coming out in the next Western Catholic Reporter, the magazine of the Alberta Licensed Practical Nurses Association, and a speech for the Alberta Teacher's Association annual meeting. Lounge Daddy
I went to school for creative writing. I have a full time job as a writer, but I don't do creative writing at work, I write boring stuff like instruction manuals. I still write poetry and fiction in my spare time. Probably when the kids are older I will go back to trying to get it published.
I would guess that writing is writing. And it is important to write something, anything, every day. But I am going to ask anyway: does writing instruction manuals, and the like, help or harm your personal (and fun) writing?
I had to think about this for a minute. Actually, yes, it helps. It doesn't make it easier to write the fun stuff every day, but I get a lot of practice at communicating, in general, and in sticking to the point. It is good discipline to have deadlines all the time, and to have to keep things short.
rhetoricfemme
I like to call myself a writer. I used to be a journalism major, worked for a newspaper for a few years, and am going to look for more writing gigs once I get this mommyhood thing situated. I'm also am hoping to partake in NaNoWriMo this year! Once I go back to school, if it'll be for Theology and/or a concentration in writing. goldenchild17
Who on here writes?
I do, though not particularly good at it. I'm working on a novel now based on traditional Irish/Celtic mythology with an emphasis on symbology and "story within the story." (ie. weak C.S. Lewis imitation). The idea and parallels I've come up with are pretty genius if I may say so myself and in the hands of a more competent writer would likely become a success. But being pretty selfish I would rather try and see if I can put it all together myself before sharing the details with someone more able than I. It will quite likely turn into a series of at least two books, though likely three since that seems to be the cooler number Also writing a second story, just a present-day social-commentary type, though that's probably just a stand-alone piece.
