Us weirdo kiwis say "chups".

(We get stink from the Aussies because of it)

It sounds unnatural, but I'd probably try one. I put ketchup on french fries, so why not chips. :)

I don't think there's a chip flavor I would not try. Those pickle pringles can be a little much but even those are good on occasion. Haven't had ketchup ones, but don't see why not, though mustard would be better :smokey:

Don't kiwibirds live in Australia too? :checkswiki: If you want to accentuate the "i" sound, it's the same as "uh", but you raise the curvature of the tongue a bit :mellow: (phonetics is phun!)

Okay...so just for the sake of my own clarity:

Yankees: Fries (rectangular prisms of potato-ey goodness) and Chips (thin crispy discs of potato-ey goodness)

Brits: Chips and Crisps

Aussies: Chips and Crisps?

Kiwis: Chups and Crisps?

Posted

That sounds about right. Canucks call fries "chips" too. Context clears it up.

Actually, IIRC, most Aussies pronounce "chips" as "cheeps" or, if it's at the end of a sentance, "che-EEEPS"

except when coupled with fried fish, then fries are chips. In which case it would be perfectly normal to put ketchup on your chips.

Iunno, I've heard that if you ask for Fish 'n' chips in some uper-states, they'll give you fish and a bag of chips.

I haven't been to the "upper" states, so they don't count :P

NBC's "Today Show" just did a little segment on Poutine. Looked very tasty. :eat:

Then they did a little cooking bit featuring:

-- Classic Poutine;
-- "Breakfast" Poutine with all the normal stuff, plus crumbled bacon (not Canadien bacon - haha!) and a sunny-side up egg;
-- "Steak and Red Onions" Poutine; which Al Roker called "Philly Cheesesteak Poutine". The Canadien chef was a little offended by that... :hehe:

Where can I find this Poutine????? Is it ONLY in Canada? :sadder:
