Also, and its kind of nitpicky, but I dont like how they use the word "space" when referring to the church ie they write "liturgical space." In my little world (population one) I start to get a little extra suspicious when I see that word on a religious community's site.

The Dominican nuns in BC are sponsored by Blessed Sacrament monastery in Farmington, MI. The BC's have one sister in formation; she's living at the Farmington monastery until final vows (I guess).

Vee, Have you thought about the Community of St. John? They are a beautiful mix of Carmelite and Dominican. Currently there USA website is down, but here is the link to their main site: http://www.stjean.com/EN/Jeu_accueil.php

They have both active and contemplative sisters, in the USA the contemplatives are in IL and TX and the active are in NJ. But internationally they are all over!

I second this. I know quite a few people who have joined the Community of St. John and this is true. I like to go on a retreat once a year down in Princeville.

The main language of the order is French, but you can learn it once you get there

It makes more sense to me in a way that He would be calling me to read and debate. Carmel seems like too much too.... holy for me. I dont deserve religious life let alone an Order that has has so many saints that are like beyond mega holy The part in bold is an excellent point.I thought it might go away, I have been kind of hoping it would go away. I know I cant run, Ive tried already in life. My priest told me to consider other Orders though so I htought I would look around again. I did before but I will do it again. I could write more but I dnt have time to once again.

Thank you this was so very beautiful and gave me a greater appreication of Dominican spirituality....But alas i have been irretrevably biten by the Carmelite bug!

However The domincans had a great influence on Carmelites when we were forced from the holy land and forced to become mendicants rather than hermits. The Dominicans facilitated this process. Unfortunately, sinc the time of our becoming included with the medicant orders there has always been a palpable strain in our order between those who have fully embraced the medicant life and those who hold on dearly to our hermit heritage.

For myself i hold strongly to the original hermit characteristics of the primitive Carmelite Rule. The desert flowers and has become my home.

Vee, as much as I hate to admit it, I had the same reaction to Web site of the Dominicans in BC. If their Community is on that list, I'm sure it's pukka, but I heard echoes of "new age" lingo on their Web site that made me want to run the other way. However, the site of their new monastery does look great.

What about the Dominicans in Menlo Park, CA? Just about most perfect weather you could want..... (Obviously, these suggestions are made for only the holiest of reasons. LOL)

For whatever reason, I hear most about the Dominican monastery in Lufkin, Texas. However, Texas weather is.......well, you know. If you're going to be cloistered, you want to be able to go outside without dying of heat prostration.

On the other hand, there IS a Carmelite monastery within close driving distance of me (Des Plaines, IL). Both my physican (whom I see once a month) and my ex (whom I don't ever see) are within a mile or two. One for two isn't bad. So, I could drop by after my monthly visit to the doctor. Assuming you're not busy crying holy tears, or something. I suspect the Superior would forbid my visiting, because you'd "talk like a secular" after an hour in my company. LOL On the other hand, I might be an interesting change of pace.

I don't know very much about cloistered Dominican Nuns, but I do know some of them have the Perpetual Rosary (where they always have a nun in choir praying the Rosary in what they call the Rosary stall .. and they pray it in the name of the Church .. like the Divine Office .. so it's not just a personal devotion, etc.) and some do not .. some have Perpetual Adoration, and some not. From this list, I know Farmington Hills has Perpetual Adoration but not the Perpetual Rosary .. while I know Buffalo has the Perpetual Rosary, though I'm not sure about if their Adoration is perpetual.

Personally, those are my two favorite aspects of Dominican spirituality .. the Rosary (especially the Perpetual Rosary .. that is awesome!) and Adoration!!

...and don't forget the fact that when Dominicans go to heaven, they reside under the mantle of Our Lady...(which will probably be full to overcrowded in there, if the Ann Arbor and Nashville doms keep growing!)
