Thank you this was so very beautiful and gave me a greater appreication of Dominican spirituality....But alas i have been irretrevably biten by the Carmelite bug!

However The domincans had a great influence on Carmelites when we were forced from the holy land and forced to become mendicants rather than hermits. The Dominicans facilitated this process. Unfortunately, sinc the time of our becoming included with the medicant orders there has always been a palpable strain in our order between those who have fully embraced the medicant life and those who hold on dearly to our hermit heritage.

For myself i hold strongly to the original hermit characteristics of the primitive Carmelite Rule. The desert flowers and has become my home. :alone::crusader::owned:

I know I cant run, Ive tried already in life. My priest told me to consider other Orders though so I htought I would look around again. I did before but I will do it again. I could write more but I dnt have time to once again.

Ah! Come visit me.

We will be highly efficient.

You're just interested in cloisters?

Okay. We can start with the Poor Clares. They're within walking distance of my house.

http://www.stanthonyshrine.org/PoorClares/

Indwelling Trinity and Nunsense will be and and if we don't visit Carmelites too. So we'll include them. And I bet your SD would approve of your visiting different communities as well as different orders. So then we hop on a city bus for 15 minutes and go to:

http://home.earthlink.net/~carmelitesofboston/community/index.html

Now we have to start driving out to the suburbs.

Somewhat more traditional Carmelites:

http://www.wickedlocal.com/danvers/news/lifestyle/x512362343/Carmelites-share-50-years-of-faith-and-love

More Poor Clares:

http://www.poorclaresandover.org/

45 minutes away we have Trappistines:

www.msmabbey.org

About two hours away there are Dominicans

http://www.vocationws.com/

And a bit farther west Visitandines

http://www.vistyr.org/

Whew!

Oh, and in the interest of fairness I should also include our Benedictines, but I'm somewhat afraid they'd burn me at the stake, so I'll wait in the car while you go visit.

::hehe: :cheers:

Ah right her screen name was saint Therese, anyone know how she is doing? A quick look at their site I didnt really see anything on vocations though.

Thanks Iggy! I looked at the site for the ones in BC and maybe Im missing something again but they also dont seem to have anything about vocations. Also, and its kind of nitpicky, but I dont like how they use the word "space" when referring to the church ie they write "liturgical space." In my little world (population one) I start to get a little extra suspicious when I see that word on a religious community's site.
Vee, as much as I hate to admit it, I had the same reaction to Web site of the Dominicans in BC. If their Community is on that list, I'm sure it's pukka, but I heard echoes of "new age" lingo on their Web site that made me want to run the other way. However, the site of their new monastery does look great.

What about the Dominicans in Menlo Park, CA? Just about most perfect weather you could want..... (Obviously, these suggestions are made for only the holiest of reasons. LOL)

For whatever reason, I hear most about the Dominican monastery in Lufkin, Texas. However, Texas weather is.......well, you know. If you're going to be cloistered, you want to be able to go outside without dying of heat prostration.

On the other hand, there IS a Carmelite monastery within close driving distance of me (Des Plaines, IL). Both my physican (whom I see once a month) and my ex (whom I don't ever see) are within a mile or two. One for two isn't bad. So, I could drop by after my monthly visit to the doctor. Assuming you're not busy crying holy tears, or something. I suspect the Superior would forbid my visiting, because you'd "talk like a secular" after an hour in my company. LOL On the other hand, I might be an interesting change of pace.

Okay, no time to comment on the Dominican vs. Carmelite controversy here :juggle: .. if that emoticon makes sense here .. I was going to use :deal: but we lost that one!! :cry2: .. maybe this one is better :getaclue: .. j j/k!

But I will add to the list of other good Dominican cloisters! :nunpray:

http://www.opnuns-fh.org/ one of their nuns posts here occassionally

http://www.usaopnuns.org/buffalo.html .. http://fundforvocati...es/SrVM.buffalo

http://www.stjudemonastery.org/

http://www.nunsmenlo.org/ (which has been mentioned) .. http://fundforvocati.../SrMI.menlo.php

I don't know very much about cloistered Dominican Nuns, but I do know some of them have the Perpetual Rosary (where they always have a nun in choir praying the Rosary in what they call the Rosary stall .. and they pray it in the name of the Church .. like the Divine Office .. so it's not just a personal devotion, etc.) and some do not .. some have Perpetual Adoration, and some not. From this list, I know Farmington Hills has Perpetual Adoration but not the Perpetual Rosary .. while I know Buffalo has the Perpetual Rosary, though I'm not sure about if their Adoration is perpetual.

Personally, those are my two favorite aspects of Dominican spirituality .. the Rosary (especially the Perpetual Rosary .. that is awesome!) and Adoration!!

God bless!

p.s. Oh, and I almost forgot the community (English speaking acutally) in Fatima! http://www.fatima-dominicans.com/ How beautiful it would be to be called there!

Ah, they would give you tea and feed you biscuits and be delighted with your sense of humor. One of the Carmelite mottos is that we 'eat well, sleep well and laugh well'.

If I enter, you must fly to Oz and visit me in the parlor! :clapping:
