Secular Music, So Far Away...

I disagree. I went to a workshop at NCYC about music, and the lady was talking about how most of the music today does send a good message. Though, in my opinion, you have to take it with a grain of salt. She gave the example of Firework by Katy Perry; the message is be yourself, you're special sort of line. Though as Christians we need to make the distinction between be yourself and be the you God made you to be. We see in the music video with the two guys kissing why the distinction needs to be made. You can pray with some secular songs. I generally don't, but I have friends that do.
I mostly listen to Christian music, classic Disney (I'm talking Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Little Mermaid, the good stuff!), wrock (aka wizard rock or Harry Potter music), and I don't even know how to classify the last small category I listen to. I pray more with the Christian music I listen to, but I still try to give God glory when listening/singing/playing secular music for the beautiful work He's done in the artists and thanking Him that I can sing and play even if it's mediocre :hehe2: Just my humble thoughts.

yeahh, i listen to most secualr music but there comes a point where i will change the station because the message in that particular son doesn't agree with what i believe. like firework (by katy perry) i will listen to but i won't listen to tonight (by pitbull) becaue it totally contradicts my morals.

I still listen to both types of music, but I tend to drift toward christian song most of the time now. Although I could go for some One Republic pretty much anytime. :)

Yes, there are some songs that result in an immediate turn of the dial for me....and it is because I don't find any redeeming quality to that particular song (Queen's 'Fat-bottomed Girls', UGH, or Rod Stewart's 'Maggie'). This doesn't mean that all the songs I listen to are 'good' - I think one of the most seductive lines *ever* shows up in 'Stairway to Heaven' which is a song I enjoy: 'There's still time to change the road you're on.' I mean, seriously - what does the devil say to us, if not *that*??? But...sometimes that reminder can be helpful, and like any good song, there's more than one way to take that line.

And sometimes, when I listen to Christian music, I'm more reminded of a TV show I like than thinking about God. I mean, it's not like all Christian songs are only about Jesus! There are some that are....but not all. And that's fine - like I said, I do find that radio station more positive/encouraging than some others.

Sometimes the complete disaster of the content of the song can ruin what would otherwise be good talent....and sometimes wholesome content is not enough to mask mediocre talent. C.S. Lewis ran into this problem with George MacDonald. He *loved* the guy's stories, and his portrayal of goodness and truth in such a simple way. But....Lewis was a university literature professor. He knew that MacDonald's writing wasn't exactly anything spectacular. So....he liked his books in spite of their quality, not because of it. And...he managed to quote or reference MacDonald in practically everything he ever wrote, so it's safe to say that he liked MacDonald enthusiastically and unreservedly...just not...professionally ;). [Lewis credited George MacDonald's Phantastes with turning him away from the occult as a young man...because it had a certain quality of 'goodness' to it.]

So, I understand why some people would see the niche market of CCM as just being a place for bad musicians to get a start. But...there are some very good Christian artists, and it's not *all* bad music. That being said....I don't generally like it for its quality - I like it for how it improves my day.

Good point. I hadn't thought of it like that.

Fr. Basil Norse did a conference on the "morality of music" and was of the opinion that most secular music has some serious problems at its essence. He deeply delved into the subject. Music is so much more than just the lyrics associated with it. You have to consider origins, beats, etc. I'll have to see if I can find something written by him about it online and post it here, to give everyone a different perspective.

The Sisters were huge into music, and very much agreed with Fr Basil's line of thinking; therefore sacred music, or similar kinds of music (take a look at the music available for sale in Ignatius Press's catalog and you'll see what I mean) were the only kinds of music the Sisters found acceptable.

I tend to agree, but I don't think ALL secular music is bad. I would agree that most of it is, though. But that's just me.

Why is that? How does secular music make you feel?
I realized when I wrote my post, I was mostly thinking of what's on the radio for my age group (early to mid 20s) as 'secular music'. This music in specifically (Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Katy Perry, or the rap or heavy metal groups, etc) really doesn't make me feel anything, I think I just got bored from it to be honest. So I'm mostly talking about today's mainstream, popular secular music, that many people my age listen to. Maybe it's the subject matter and the lyrics, but also I tend like classical music more (in terms of the actual musical style). I can't really get into rap, or metal, country (except I like "Jesus take the wheel" ;)), or R&B (when I was younger I loved this one though). I can listen to jazz but I'm more drawn to Classical, Gregorian chant, or artists like Enya, Josh Groban, etc. Sometimes I listen to soundtracks or music from other cultures. I also like some Christian artists that would be considered more 'rock music' like Casting Crowns. I like some Catholic artists too.

When I was younger (pre-teen) I listened to the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys.. hahaha :) that's the age you really want to fit in. I really liked the Spice Girls though.

Sometimes....I *am* angry. And frustrated. And I see nothing wrong with listening to music that is angry, too. It's not quite like blowing off steam, but, it can help, in a way, I guess. My roommate and I dubbed this song 'Physics Music' during college - because it expressed our emotions while doing physics homework so well. :)

lol! "Physics Music" :) Is this song actually about Feanor, - from the Silmarillion?? (I can't really imagine there being another one though ;)).

me too! :) He's the first Christian music artist I came across. I've always liked his music. (and I wish I could have met him while he was alive).

For me, I've noticed I've far less of a need to listen to secular music. Don't get me wrong, I love a good beat. I used to do a lot of ballroom, latin and swing dancing and my ipod is full of the music. But... I haven't actually listened to my ipod for several months. I find I prefer to be in silence.

Also, I've noticed my reading tastes have really changed. I used to love historical romances (don't judge me!). In the past year I've no desire what so ever to start reading one of them. I think God is gradually filtering my tastes so they're more in line with what will help me in my vocation, rather than disturb me. Does that make sense?

For me it goes in cycles. Sometimes I listen to a mix of Christan and secular (I admit that country holds a special place in my heart). Sometimes I listen to one artist for weeks. sometimes I just stay in silence. I think that what we listen to and read mirrors what we have inside but it also feeds what we have inside so sometimes when we find that one thing is no longer feeding our soul we change it consciously or unconsciously.

Hehe, yep! Blind Guardian's 'Nightfall in Middle Earth' is a concept album of the Silmarillion! It's great....if you like German metal. ;) Okay, to be honest, I don't like metal, except for this band, but I do love their music (particularly their Tolkien-inspired songs). I've even seen them in concert! This particular song is set after Fëanor burns the ships, so...yeah, he's a bit angry at the time!
