Sheep emoticons... found your lost sheep, Fr. E -- , and YES, you are right -- of COURSE sheep come in many colors, so of course it would vary from sheep to sheep! DUUUH! :paperbag: (fresh out of gray paper bags, however.....) And of course they would make the habits from whatever wool was handy. :)

Here are some 'sheep' --- and yes, in many colors! -- just cut & paste as needed!

The great sheep debate.
What about Jacobs sheep? They have naturally occuring brown patches and all over brown in some cases.

Well, have to agree with both of you... how about we just agree that sheep are sheep colored, and Franciscans are sheep colored. will this work? ;)

As my avatar would say, that's what my mama told me! My mama Llama!

PAX et bonum!

Bl. Junipero Serra (Fray Junipero Serra) was the Franciscan in charge of 'Alta California' -- modern California. "Baja California" is the peninsula off the bottom of California, and it is still part of Mexico.

I can't be sure about the Francisans who were in San Antonio (Texas) but I do know about the ones who were in California. The Franciscans in California wore the grey ones -- and it had to do with them being missionaries sent to New Spain (i.e., Mexico). Not sure if it was a decision that was made in Spain, or if they just couldn't get the brown stuff cheaply!

My bet is that the Franciscans would always select the color that was most simple, humble and cheap!

We discussed this on the habit group. The Franciscan missionaries wore blue-grey in honor of Our Lady. They added something blue--not sure what they would have used, something natural as dyes as we know them hadn't come out yet. The Daughters of Charity wore grey until the MM apparitions. Then they added blue for Our Lady.

Blessings,
Gemma

Both woad and indigo have been around for centuries; neither are expensive.

Just to show that I am not completely biased, here is another religious community that falls into my 'favorites'

These are the "Poor Clares of the Immaculate" (not to be confused with the Franciscan sister of the immaculate )

Unfortunately they are only in Italy right now.

AVE MARIA!

My goodness it's so hard to say. I love the habit of the Carmelites, Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church, Sisters of St. John, Benedictines of Mary...goodness, the list goes on. Personally I prefer the look of habits in which the neck is covered (but there are also many lovely habits for which it's not). Obviously that preference didn't determine which community I felt God was calling me to, though. ;) I liked their habit, but it wasn't my favorite. If pressed, I'd probably say Carmelite, but that's probably because of my great love for St. Therese. :)

Those are lovely... what do you think it would take to get them in the US?

I don't think they're hoods, it's just the veil that's the same colour.
Yep, although the color is a little different. definitely one of my favorite habits!
