We discussed this on the habit group. The Franciscan missionaries wore blue-grey in honor of Our Lady. They added something blue--not sure what they would have used, something natural as dyes as we know them hadn't come out yet. The Daughters of Charity wore grey until the MM apparitions. Then they added blue for Our Lady.

Blessings,
Gemma

Both woad and indigo have been around for centuries; neither are expensive.

Just to show that I am not completely biased, here is another religious community that falls into my 'favorites'

These are the "Poor Clares of the Immaculate" (not to be confused with the Franciscan sister of the immaculate )

Unfortunately they are only in Italy right now.

My goodness it's so hard to say. I love the habit of the Carmelites, Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church, Sisters of St. John, Benedictines of Mary...goodness, the list goes on. Personally I prefer the look of habits in which the neck is covered (but there are also many lovely habits for which it's not). Obviously that preference didn't determine which community I felt God was calling me to, though. ;) I liked their habit, but it wasn't my favorite. If pressed, I'd probably say Carmelite, but that's probably because of my great love for St. Therese. :)

Those are lovely... what do you think it would take to get them in the US?

I don't think they're hoods, it's just the veil that's the same colour.
