Republicans And The Environment

As for what you said, I have no doubt there are tons of jobs in the coal industry. There are also thousands of jobs that would be lost if we had our dream and shut down Planned Parenthood, too. I'm not saying coal mining and abortion are on the same level, but it's the same principal: You can't not shut an industry down simply because jobs will be lost.  . . .

No, coal mining and abortion are not on the same level, as abortion, unlike coal mining or other such industries, is the direct deliberate taking of an innocent human life (in other words, murder).  The government shouldn't have the power to shut down businesses willy-nilly unless they are engaging in blatantly unlawful activity such as murder, theft, fraud, etc.

A central issue here, which everyone seems to be ignoring, is how we've granted unelected federal bureaucracies such as the EPA the power to shut down whatever plants or businesses it sees fit based on its own determinations of what is "bad for the earth" - and allowing it to redefine gasses such as CO2 as "pollutants."

Thus, the EPA is given essentially legislative powers, which in the Constitution belong solely to Congress, and not to the president, or to presidentially-elected bodies.

Such decisions should belong to Congress, and be governed by the normal legislative process decribed in the Constitution,  as befits a democratic republic.

We've granted far to much power to unelected federal bureaucracies - such as the EPA, IRS, NSA, etc,m which are open to much abuse (and has in fact been much abused), and these bodies ought to be abolished.

From a somewhat different angle but here's a good piece from Forbes on the EPA regulations and coal plants.

There is not much division in Australia on this topic. It is quite common to be pro-life and pro-environment without being bothered for it.

Well, were the people in the US who, like Socrates, were the most vocal their supposed deep and reverential respect for human life actually intellectually consistent theb that would be the norm.

I'm pro-life and pro-environment.  However, I am anti supporting-socialist-policies-in-the-name-of-unproven-malthusian-theories-promoted-using-moral-attacks-and-scare-tactics.

CO2 is not a pollutant. We are polluting the earth by breathing if that is what you are saying. Let's just go plant some more trees so this whole issue will be resolved. :p

No need to plant trees.  Just buy some carbon offsets like Al Gore and Leo Dicaprio do.

That's difficult to do when the rain forest is being chopped down at astronomical speeds.

I was going to bring up the rain forest but I decided not to. I didn't want to complicate things.

Life's a sad story. :P
