cmotherofpirl
The discussion of holiness, humility and an outward sign reminds me of discussions we used to have as Dominicans and when and where we should wear our habit. Also, the short answer of why men shouldn't wear it and women should (or women should wear some sort of head covering): "because of the angels." 1 Corinthians 11
of course no one has a clue what that means :
homeschoolmom
Three conditions under which I would wear one: 1. I attended a Latin mass and didn't want to stand out 2. The Vatican tells me to 3. I take up flamenco dancing
son_of_angels
For me, as a teenage guy, when I see a young lady wearing a mantilla, I immediately recognize her as someone who is humble, pious, and authentic. In other words, good wife material. Although at present I am discerning a call to celibacy, young women with mantillas definitely sometimes make me question my vocation! Totus Tuus
Three reasons I like wearing a mantilla: I know I'm not distracting guys with my hair (not that I have great hair). It kind of serves as a blinder to the things going on around you. When I was talking to a PCPA (member of the Order I'm joining in two weeks) she said that in Adoration if she starts to get distracted she can kind of pull the veil around her so she can only see Jesus Mary wore one, even when she appeared in recent times. I don't have anything against those who choose not to wear one, but for me I feel this is what I am supposed to do.
Aloysius
for those women who do not wear some sort of veil to the Wedding Feast of the Lamb, may I ask you: would you (or did you) wear a veil to your wedding? if so, why did you do that? Aloysius
of course, the same could be said of anything... the very fact that someone wears clothes instead of walking around nude doesn't necessarily mean they're a more civilized person- there are any number of reasons they could be wearing clothing. clothing is still a great simple of order and civilization when someone is wearing it. a mantilla is still a pius, biblical, and timeless universal-Christian symbol. cmotherofpirl
When I went to school everyone was required to wear them, and I guarantee you pious and biblical were not often on our minds, and had little effect on our hearts. It was something you did, like having to wear a dress when if was 10 degrees.
Aloysius
same reason civilization wouldn't be on the mind of an uncivilized man if he were forced to wear clothing. I was forced to go to Mass as a child and I would not have any thoughts of going to Mass being a holy action or even a prayerful action, it was just something we were forced to do. the mantilla was not a symbol to you, but the fact is it remains a symbol regardless of your experience with it. there is no reason to throw it out based on some bad experience where you did not interiorize the exterior action... otherwise we should throw out our clothes we were forced into as a child, or we should throw out our rosaries that often are empty exterior symbols never interiorized to some people. whether or not the meaning of a symbol is or was interiorized by any particular person does not alter its symbolic value
photosynthesis
I got one recently, but I don't wear it to Mass on Campus. I wear it to Adoration...

Ash Wednesday
I have my mom's old mantilla, in part I keep it for sentimental reasons. But if I attended a tridentine mass I would probably wear it. I knew a woman who was somewhat traditional and she felt strongly about the head covering, but she would wear a nice hat. Cmom, did some women wear hats instead of veils before Vatican II?
Totus Tuus
Yeah, you just had to have your head covered, whether you wore a hat or mantilla it didn't matter, as far as I know.
