Pete-ster Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 (edited) I am. I figure that if "Soldier4Him" can open up about himself and proclaim that he is a diabetic, then I can do the same about my disability. So here it goes: I have Spina Bifida, and am in a wheelchair. What about you? Edited August 28, 2004 by Pete-ster
Phazzan Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 Yes I'm handicapped, but you don't need me to tell you that.
Noel's angel Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 we are all handicapped in some way, its just that some peoples handicaps are more noticable than others, if we didnt have a handicap, wed be perfect, and ive still to meet a perfect person
Sursum Corda Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 I will have handicapped parking for the rest of my life - so, I guess technically, I am...but you wouldn't know from looking at me. Some oh-so-lovely drunk driver hit me head-on a few years ago and I've basically had my right ankle rebuilt as a result. I don't use the handicapped parking unless I'm in a lot of pain though...
Seven77 Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 yes. i have muscular dystrophy and am in a wheelchair. i had a spiritual healing in Lourdes and was given the grace of acceptance. thanks for posting Pete-ster
Ekilharas Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 I don't consider myself a cripple. I am handicapped. I had scoliosis as a child and still retain the effect of that disease. My neck from the large bone in the shoulder to the point of attachment with the skull is at a 30 degree angle now and the disks between are all lipping. Sometimes the bones catch on each other and I have great difficulty moving my neck and head. (Pain-yes-sometimes very bad) If I sleep wrong, I end up with 4 days worth of migraine type headaches, two days on one side of my head and two days on the other. My lower spine is also curved and the bones are all degenerating. That causes problems with my hips, knees and even my feet. I recently had to get orthotics because my arches were collapsing and to correct the fact that the curve had caused one leg to be longer than the other. I have also become almost totally deaf even with very powerful hearing aids. This is the one that causes most problems for me as everyone keeps saying how sorry they are. I have to keep telling them it is not their fault. In fact, I tell them that I lost my hearing because I was a terrible gossiper. So the Lord said this is for me not to hear the gossip anymore. I give thanks to our Lord because he Loves me enough to let me see things from a different perspective that I would have missed if I were not this way. I give thanks to Him also because I still can walk, and talk and type and read and share with others. I give thanks to Him too because I have no use for TV or Radio. I enjoy music but cannot understand recorded lyrics or words. All of these have saved me from a great deal of frustration and over anxiety with todays world news and opinions. So I truly count myself Blessed, O by the way, I help teach RCIA, I am a Lector and sometimes a Cantor for Mass. Yes, Blessed that is what I am. Thanks be to God, Nell
Mrs. Bro. Adam Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 I don't think anyone is handicapped, challenged maybe, but not handicapped. I'm in relatively good health, if you don't count the scoliosis (sp?) that I got as a result of years of sports and Basic Training. But God has given me the grace and strength to get through the harder days.
ICTHUS Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 I intensely dislike the poll on this thread, but yes, I am a 'cripple'. I have Spina Bifida, but, by God's grace, can walk with braces.
curtins Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 Im not a cripple- but like noel's angel sed- were all handicap in some ways but handicap ppl are cool!!!!!!
ICTHUS Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 A brief history of the word 'handicapped' People were coming home from wars with no legs, no arms, etc. They were putting out their caps to collect money. The word 'handicapped' means 'cap in hand' - it means 'beggar'. I for one work a full time job and am NOT a beggar. Don't call people handicapped, please.
Noel's angel Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 ok, fair enough, i dont think it is the best phrase to use
immaculata Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004
I figure that if "Soldier4Him" can open up about himself and proclaim that he is a diabetic, then I can do the same about my disability.
Soldier4Him is a girl... (and my beloved prayer partner!) Miss Liss
lifeteenchick527 Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 i really dont have too many medical problems....but 4 of my brothers are in wheelchairs and they cant walk or talk and stuff like that... i would tell you wat they have...but not even the docotrs knoe wat it is...they r 13, 11, 9, and 2. most of the simptoms that they have can fall under the category of cebral palsy or muscular dystrophy...but they still dont knoe wat it really is.
Noel's angel Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 we all have our imperfections, my list is too long to write down, basically because it is never ending, nothing i do is perfect, i am not perfect
Thy Geekdom Come Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 I don't think asthma and halatosis count, and that's about all I have. I've had a benign tumor, does that count? I'm predisposed to heart failure and melanoma, does that count?
cmotherofpirl Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 I have a ligament defect that allows my ligaments to stretch like worn rubber bands, so I have to be careful not to dislocate parts of me. A nightmare can mean a partially dislocated shoulder in the morning. I also need a breathing machine at night.
