Thy Geekdom Come Posted August 28, 2004 Posted August 28, 2004 This is interesting to see the seemingly disproportionate number of Phatmassers with rare and extreme physical challenges. I've always thought that hardships bring us closer to God.

Pete-ster Posted August 28, 2004 Author Posted August 28, 2004
A brief history of the word 'handicapped' People were coming home from wars with no legs, no arms, etc. They were putting out their caps to collect money. The word 'handicapped' means 'cap in hand' - it means 'beggar'. I for one work a full time job and am NOT a beggar. Don't call people handicapped, please.
What word do you prefer? Personally, I like "cripple," it's short, it's sterile, it has a distinctive sound. I hate "gimp", it's usually used derogatorily, and all the PC terms are condecending...
I understand your dislike for the terms "cripple" and "handicapped" (I agree they can and are often used in a derrogatory manner) but if you noticed the person who made this poll has Spina Bifida, too, and is "confined" to a wheelchair. I don't think he meant it to be offensive in any way, in fact I rather admire his seemingly (forgive me for not being able to think of a better term here) flippant way of embracing his condition and all the terms that people tend to apply to it.

toledo_jesus Posted August 29, 2004 Posted August 29, 2004 I was rough on my knees during adolescence, jumping off roofs and stuff, and my whole leg aches when it rains. Is that arthritis? I'm only 20. My wrist hurts as well, but I think that's from sitting at the computer and typing wrong.
Sinner Posted August 29, 2004 Posted August 29, 2004 Terms regarding physical problems have always been an issue with me. I am a Physical Therapist and have some lesser physical problems but deal daily with folks that have severe ones..... I give thanks to God daily that I have not been put to a similar task. People with physical problems that continue to exhibit grace and dignity inspire me!! They are given a special blessing to show that nothing can separate them from their God. Medically speaking: Problems with movement are called impairments. Impairments may result in disability depending on what you are trying to accomplish in the real world. Ex-a typist that lost his fingers would have a large disability, a sprinter would not. Both have suffered an impairment. I too discourage the use of "handicapped", "crippled", "gimp" or other slang usage, and would never use them clinically.......... but, when someone who has suffered an impairment uses them, esp in speaking about themselves I believe they are using a form of humor to deal with their situation and are actually making fun of the world at large and how it deals with people with physical problems....so its probably healthy to laugh about it!! Crying stains the sheets Also, I personally do not like the really sappy descriptors such as "challenged" and the like. Oh well...... I am really not very passionate about this subject, and besides... my fingers now have an impairment due to excessive typing.

IcePrincessKRS Posted August 29, 2004 Posted August 29, 2004 Thanks for the insight Sinner. I still admire Pete's approach (seemingly, so do you).

It's never made the slightest bit of difference to me...

Pete-ster Posted August 30, 2004 Author Posted August 30, 2004 I'm left-handed as well. It is going to make driving with hand controlls extra interesting.
Guest T-Bone Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 (edited) I have slight scoliosis, have hearing loss in the range of 25 - 50 dB, and am clumsy. I also have quite a few "benign" nerve tumors. I severed the two tendons in my left middle finger, so my left hand is slightly "impaired." I also have learning disabilities and horrible handwriting. Oh and my feet stink. Edited August 30, 2004 by T-Bone
