DemonSlayer Posted December 16, 2004 Posted December 16, 2004 Doug, why was Scott Waters, the vocalist from Ultimatum who sang with you in the Once Dead performance/s, wearing a priest's collar in a set of live pictures on the Ultimatum website? What's the deal with that?
dtofdh Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 Good Question. I have no idea why Scott did that. In that picture he is performing with his band, Ultimatum. I have only known Scott for a few months, and I would think that it was not out of ridicule for priests; but he was probably making a dramatic attempt at suggesting that we are all called to be priests. He probably doesn't consider it to be offensive, as he is not a Catholic, but it is to me. I would object to him wearing that if he was performing with us. I have come to have respect for Scott, as he has defended the Catholic church once on another site. He is a very dedicated Christian, and I don't see him as a Catholic Basher. He will be performing with us at Cornerstone, which is one of the largest Christian festivals in the country. This will be an enormous opportunity for me to speak to thousands of Christians, and share my Catholic faith with non-Catholics. I am just curious, have you seen the Once Dead site? I am actively involved on the message board there. DougT
DemonSlayer Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 Do you mean the Roxx Productions website? I haven't been to the forums, but I have visited the site. Great news about performing at Cornerstone, I wish I could go to one, but I don't live in America. Do you know if any other Catholic artists will be there as well?
dtofdh Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 Hi demonslayer, Yes, I was referring to the Roxx Productions site. Where exactly are you from? I live in California. Cornerstone is huge in the U.S. It takes place the first week of July in Chicago, Illinois over several days. I believe there is also one in Florida around May. We played there twice, but that was in the 80s. Last year P.O.D., Switchfoot, Stacie Orrico, Delirious and many more performed. I am really not familiar with the Catholic music scene. The only band I've really heard of as far as rock music goes, is Seven Sorrows. I'm not aware of any Catholic Artists performing at Cornerstone. It would be great if Seven Sorrows or any other Catholic Artists looked into it. Take care, DougT
DemonSlayer Posted December 20, 2004 Posted December 20, 2004 I'm from Australia, so I'm definitely not gonna be able to go to a Cornerstone anytime soon.
SevenSorrows Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004
We recently heard that Seven Sorrows played at our parish, but it was after the fact, and we missed them. My Catholic faith was always a very important influence in our bands direction, and I hope to see many other bands like it.
What parish are you from, when did we play? Do you play guitar??? You could join 7s :band:
Cathurian Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 OH DUDE LIKE DUDE LIKE OWOWOWOWOWOW/ DOUG FROM *THE* VENGEANCE RISING? Your music just rocks my world sir. Vengeance Rising is one of my favorite -- if not THE favorite -- Christian metal bands out there. Slayer, only with positive lyrics. But not exactly like Slayer, so you're not a ripoff. I love you guys. I mean I never ever ever ever thought that a member from VR would be posting here at phatmass. Yeah, I'm starstruck, but DUDE you just ROCK. Keep rocking for Christ!
dtofdh Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 (edited) Seven Sorrows, you guys played at St Bruno's around 6 months ago. I was bummed when I found out that we missed you. Anyway, In September 2005 there is going to be a festival in So Cal, with a lot of old time hardcore Christian bands (we will be one of them). When the dates are set I will check with the promoter, and see if we workout getting you guys on the bill. It would be great to have a Catholic Band in the mix. And Cathurian, yes I am that Doug, and I am loving this board all of the members are totally active and helpful. I often have debates with Non Denominational Christians about my faith and it is awesome to have so many dedicated hard core Catholics to bounce questions off of. I see that my role in Vengeance (now Once Dead) has changed from purely evangelistic, to a defender of the Catholic faith to the millions of Non Denominational christians as well. I know many of the Christian bands that were mentioned as being Anti-Catholic and they probably are, but most likely due to ignorance. They have been told by a friend who was told by his brother in-law's first wife, that we worship statues at our secret masses, and the Pope is the Anti-Christ etc... Once I meet some old fans they flip out when they find out that I am Catholic, and sometimes they are willing to listen to me as I dispell all of the ridiculous rumors. I have been noticing a movement towards a more religous type of worship service, and many are looking to the Eastern Orthodox churches, because they dislike the Catholic church so much. So I am pleased that they are seeking Orthodoxy but not at the cost of the Catholic Church. Anyway, do you guys know of any other Catholic Bands out there? DougT Edited December 22, 2004 by dtofdh
Oik Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 Awesome! Not really much out there...oh but you better believe...it's coming.
DemonSlayer Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 (edited)
many are looking to the Eastern Orthodox churches, because they dislike the Catholic church so much. In terms of Catholic metal/hard rock bands, the only ones I know of are the ones I mentioned on the first page of this thread, other than that the Catholic rock artists I like are Backyard Galaxy and Matt Maher. If you meant locally, there was a rock band from Fremantle, Australia, called Disciple, but I'm not sure if they're still around or not. Edited December 22, 2004 by DemonSlayer
dtofdh Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004
What do you mean by not at the cost of the Catholic Church?
I mean that so many Non Denoms are looking for something a little more spritual than what they currently have, but they have a preconceived idea that the Catholic Church is off base, and maybe even a cult, so they look for the next thing on the scope. I am hoping that God can use me in music again in a different facet. Perhaps I can minister to the Non Denoms who don't understand that the Catholic Church is what they are really looking for, and dispell the misconceptions At least that is what I am praying for, we'll see what God wants. tres sietes Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Cool topic. I myself have tried to form a catholic rock/metal band here. I was in a band, but it was not catholic or christian. I wanted to hook up with people that are like me and have the same ideals. I could find no one. I was even willing to hook up with some our protestant brothers (as long as they were respectful of my faith). It's hard enough finding people, but when you get specific.... Anyway, I won't bore you guys with details..... :boring:
dtofdh Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005 I have faced the same issues myself. You can find a lot of Catholic musicians out there but they are in secular bands, and not ministry bands. So what type of music do you play? Who are your influences? Cathurian, how did you hear about Vengeance? I know that we had a large following out there, but I was never sure how we got exposure out there. DougT

Supposedly alot of todays bands have christian/catholic members, but the band itself isn't christian. Here in Chicago, it doesn't seem like there are many of us. I wanted to form or join a band that was heavy, but have a positive message. Something not "preachy", but also not so vauge that whatever message gets lost. I'm just gonna keep prayin' and see where the Lord leads... I'm not really set into one genre of music, but I would say that I enjoy music that's more on the heavier side. I'm into lots of music, both christian and secular. My musical journey is kind of a long story. I've scoped out one of your old bands cd's (once dead) a while ago, but it is extremely hard to find. Good stuff.......
tres sietes Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005
Do you listen to Soul Embraced as well?
Yes I do. Lance Garvin and Rocky's side project. I really liked Living Sacrifice though. Man, I was in shock when I heard they were calling it quits. Saw them like three times and they rocked! The Hammering Process was an awesome album.
DemonSlayer Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005 (edited) I wish I could've seen LS live, but apparently they never even toured outside the US, I was also shocked when I read on Solid State's website that they'd broken up since I didn't see it coming at all, especially after Cory Putman (who's now with Norma Jean) had intended to replace Bruce and that the band had decided to continue without him. Actually SE was never a side project, since Rocky had formed the band before joining LS, but have you heard about The Burning? That's Rocky's new metal band, not sure if this means the end of SE though. Their website. Edited January 1, 2005 by DemonSlayer

Cory (Matt's brother) was Rocky's replacement after he decided to play drums for Evanescence. He was here with LS on their "farewell tour". That's one I missed. I do remember vaugely about Soul embraced being around before Rocky joined LS. I thought that Soul Embraced disbanded a while ago though. Anyway, I was wondering if maybe, just maybe LS would get back together, even if it was under a new name or a few new members once the Evanescence thing died down some. Who knows. May never happen. Have you seen the Living Sacrifice "Processed" DVD?
DemonSlayer Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005 Yeah, I knew that Cory firstly replaced Rocky on guitars for what became their final tour, but in an e-mail to their mailing list, it talked about how the band would continue without Bruce and that Cory would be the new vocalist. I haven't seen the dvd because i've never ordered anything online, have you seen it/have it?

It has tons of live footage and backstage stuff. It even has a multiple angle feature where you can have the camera set behind Lance's kit! You may be able to find it on the LS website or eBay.
