toledo_jesus Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 (edited) There are more than these three who are churning out bad "liturgical" music. Here is something for us to visit... toledo_jesus Posted February 2, 2005 Author Posted February 2, 2005
i've never even heard of them
yes you have. We Come to Your Feast Here I am Lord City of God the list goes on and on, basically they have infected liturgical music over the past 20 years to the point where you can't escape them unless you go Tridentine or have a VERY good music minister...
rachael Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 i've never heard of those songs.....no. really. i haven't.
jp2_rules Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005
yes you have.
yeah, they're all over the liturgical music scene. their music is quite good, so it's kinda ashame...
jp2_rules Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 i will add, though, that i don't like that website. it's over-the-top stupid about stuff, and the ppl there are very very negative, and seem to only want gregorian chant and the most traditional of music.
toledo_jesus Posted February 2, 2005 Author Posted February 2, 2005 (edited) well, when you hear some stupid song every sunday that conflicts with the gospel passage you just heard, it tends to grate on your nerves. Also when you are forced to speak 'as God' like in Here I am Lord. ugh that makes me uncomfortable! Edited February 2, 2005 by toledo_jesus
stargirl3:16 Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 I sorta agree. Those songs are good, but they tend to be overused.
theculturewarrior Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 I've seen David Haas in person. I still much prefer Palestrina.
randy_the_clown Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005
yeah, they're all over the liturgical music scene. their music is quite good, so it's kinda ashame...
Um... yeah. I have to say that if I hear one more person state that they have stopped going to Mass because of the "Mass of Creation" I am going to travel to Minnesota myself and burn the originals. Their music is the lamest stuff on the planet. HOWEVER... I don't find myself to be lumped with the "Bring back Chant!" crowd because, quite frankly... it is nice, but I don't think it brings people in. If we are meant to evangelize, then modern music must be made sacred because it has a place in the hearts of the people. Ideally, music wouldn't matter, but if good music brings you to God, then bad music...
jp2_rules Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005
well, when you hear some stupid song every sunday that conflicts with the gospel passage you just heard, it tends to grate on your nerves. Also when you are forced to speak 'as God' like in Here I am Lord. ugh that makes me uncomfortable!
that song doesn't bother me as much as "I Myself am the Bread of Life". that song makes we wanna get sick. my former parish had plenty of bad music. i'm not arguing that it doesn't grate on your nerves. i just think that the ppl on that website don't handle it very well.
Thomas Michael Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005
Um... yeah. I have to say that if I hear one more person state that they have stopped going to Mass because of the "Mass of Creation" I am going to travel to Minnesota myself and burn the originals. Their music is the lamest stuff on the planet.
While I wouldn't blame them, that IS the wrong way to go about avoiding the haunted-house Mass music. I've just gone to more Spanish-language Masses. (I'm out of luck if the Haugen's Heroes come up with a Spanish version of "Mass of Creation", though.) It's getting bad here in the DFW area... it seems like I hear that blasted service music in 75% of the churches I've been to. And now Dallas's CATHEDRAL is using it. These are sad times for those who like diversity in Mass music. I might end up writing a letter to the Catholic newspapers in town about this.
jimbo Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 The problem is where these are printed up. The majority of Missalettes and Song Books are printed by an Oregon company, one of the most liberal (and anti-Catholic) states in the union. I should know, I used to live in the hell hole.
melporcristo Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 let's be a little nice here though ... SHalom friends, shalom. Keep praying for these musicians.
BurkeFan Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 Some Benedictines I know would totally agree with you. And I kind of agree with them. Songs that are both catchy and heretical are bad.
Thomas Michael Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 I wouldn't wish any harm on the composers, never. There's a bunch of songs from those three that I do like. I do admit the music directors tend to overuse them. And I still think Dan Schutte ripped off Sherwood Schwartz... "Here I Am Lord"'s chorus sounds WAY too much like the Brady Bunch theme.
kateri05 Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 ahaha, this is too funny: A Ditty to God (after Dan Schutte's The City of God) Awake from your slumber, arise from your sleep; The homily's over, it wasn't too deep. He spoke of a 'journey', well, what else does he say? We're all part of a 'story' as we go on our way. So let's sing a ditty to God, It's a way we can all be together. And we'll be the City of God If we tell his story once more. We're all part of a journey, to 'I-don't-know-where', But that isn't important, so long as we're here. Be part of the story of me and of you, And don't worry asking if the story is true. No, just sing a ditty to God, It's a way we can all be together. It would be a pity for God If we told his story no more. So come if you're ready, the meek and the smug, For God is a Teddy, he'll give you a hug. And take consolation, till next time we meet, As you go on your journey, God's in the back seat. So just sing a ditty to God, It's a way we can all be together. It would be a pity for God If we told his story no more. the sad part is, this is the carp i grew up with... i just didn't know any better. it took my protestant husband to say to me: why do you sing these HORRIBLE songs! so i went from that to a youth mass with protestant p&w... isn't there a happy medium of good liturgical music? somewhere? anywhere?
MrsFrozen Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 Why is this music wrong? I really don't understand this.
EcceNovaFacioOmni Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 Their songs are at Mass every Sunday here. I hate them. Hate is a strong word.
