FlyLikeABird Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 I like those guys. I choose my music VERY carefully and ALWAYS have songs that connect to the readings of that day. I consider myself to be a good judge of music and a good musician. I take time to pray about my music choices. I have many times been complimented on my choice of music. By traditionalists no less.

sorry about that. I don't know which songs you are referring to, but Haugen, Haas, Schutte, Cooney, Joncas and the various Protestant standards all smell of elderberries for Mass. they are toothless and ineffectual, and sometimes downright misleading.
argent_paladin Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Here are some lyrics I hate: "We have been sung throughout all of history, give us the courage to enter the song! " From the aforementioned "Gather Us In" "Sing a new church into being" I hate them both because the verb "sing" should not be applied transitively to persons!! One sings songs, or notes, or bars, or music, etc not "a new church" or "ourselves". Plus, the idea of forming a new Church is self-evidently heretical. And the "WE have been sung" as well as "gather US in " emphasizes the actions of the congregation rather than God. Some lyrics are downright communist: "for a just and equal sharing of the things that earth affords"
argent_paladin Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 FlyLikeABird, Don't take offense at these questions but, How familiar are you with the liturgical documents governing music in the liturgy? Do you follow the guidelines laid down in the General Instruction, for example? Has your choir ever sung Palestrina, de Victoria, Mozart or any music written before the 20th century? If not, then it would be difficult to judge the quality of your musical selection. People who eat hamburger don't know what they are missing until they try filet mignon. No one is saying that the three attacked composers are not the best Catholic liturgical composers since the Second Vatican Council.
