conservativecatholic
Although I'm a huge supporter of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, I would love to see an Eastern Rite Cardinal be elected as Supreme Pontiff. The tradition of the Eastern Church is truly awesome! Watching and listening to the Byzantine chant at the papal funeral sent chills down my spine. By the way, to those of you who doubt the ability of an Easterner to lead the Church, shame. Let's ban Latin Americans from the papacy since many of their Cardinals express loyalty to the Charismatic movement. Although I cannot stand the modernization of the Church's ancient liturgy (especially in Latin America), it is wrong to ban Cardinals and Patriarchs from the election process soley due to their geographical location and liturgical practice. We must breathe with both the Eastern and Western lungs of the Church! Edited April 11, 2005 by conservativecatholic

God Conquers
Cardinal Sin is a VERY good Cardinal... and could be in the running. But I think I heard he's very sick so he can't be in the conclave.... hmmm.
Mickey's_Girl
Just watched the EWTN show on the Conclave. I get the sense that, when those boys go into that chapel, all bets are off. Can I offer the official nomination and possible prediction of "Cardinal Somone-Off-The-Radar-Nobody-Ever Suspected-Because-The-Holy-Spirit-Can-Surprise-Us" ?
WORD!!! Tell it like it is, Ash Wednesday! MG

Guest Eremite
By the way, to those of you who doubt the ability of an Easterner to lead the Church, shame.
It's not a question of him leading the Church, but him leading the west. The Bishop of Rome has for his primary duty the care of the Western Church. Lacking a head who shares our Latin traditions (Liturgical as well as Theological), a grave injustice would be done to one lung of the Church.
it is wrong to ban Cardinals and Patriarchs from the election process soley due to their geographical location and liturgical practice.
No, it is not wrong to ban someone because of their geographical location. There is absolutely nothing wrong with limiting the Bishopric of Rome to Romans. But that's another question (I don't advocate that, just for the record). A Byzantine Bishop isn't just a Latin Bishop dressed up in Eastern garb. He has an entirely different theological and spiritual tradition, which Western Catholics do not share. The only way he could adequately fulfill his mission to the Latins, as Pope, would be to create another Patriarch of the West, as Aloysius has proposed. In theory, I wouldn't care about that, but I think it would demand a major restructuring of the Papacy, and I'm not so sure that is beneficial to the Church.
maybe a Moscow I
As the Jews like to say at Passover, "Next year in Jerusalem", or in our case, "Next year in Moscow!"
argent_paladin
Cardinal Sin's been sick for years. Does anyone know how he is really doing? And btw, who are the cardinal electors who are to ill to travel? I heard that two of them aren't coming to the conclave.

Norseman82
This one caught my eye in another thread (http://phorum.phatmass.com/index.php?showtopic=32154): Gabriel Zubeir Wako Picture: Considering the last Conclave chose someone from behind the Iron Curtain and the result was the fall of the Iron Curtain, and considering the suffering of Christians in Sudan, I have this funny feeling he could be the surprise of the conclave. Does anyone know any more about him?
Guest Eremite
Are we gonna have a poll before the conclave, to see whether or not Phatmass gets the winner right?

JP2Iloveyou
I refuse to speculate who the Holy Spirit might choose to shepherd the Church, but one name I would throw out there is Jean-Baptiste Cardinal Pham Ming Man, a Vietnamese Archbishop. God called JPII to topple the Soviets, I think now would be a good time to topple the Chinese communists and Cardinal Pham Ming Man might be the man to do it. Like I said though, I refuse to speculate. It is he Holy Spirit's decision and whoever he chooses will be the right person to lead the Church.
