Didacus Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 The Energy Crunch To Come By Michael T. Klare Data released annually at this time ... http://www.motherjones.com/news/dailymojo/...rgy_crunch.html Many experts claim we are experiencing the end of an era - the oil era. this, many say, is a catastrophic event because there is no 'new evnergy era' to go to. We will have no choice in the near future to return to the coal age with drastic consequences. Energy is the most important ressource to human biological survival, and oil, being the greatest energy ressource available to humanity, ahs become indispensable to the point that without it, some estimate that HALF the human population of 6 billion would starve to death within a year! just wondering... has any of you out there heard about this? Has anyone given it any kind of thought?
StColette Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 hmm haven't heard anything about this I have heard that the US reserve of oil could run the country for about 100 yrs

China's demand has already nearly doubled the price of gasoline from ~10 years ago. It's a finite resource. Unfortunately, there's no easy replacement for oil, and no economic drive to discover possible non-easy replacements. OTOH, your source is probably a bit more alarmist than necessary. People have been saying this for decades, and new oil reserves keep being found. Edited July 21, 2005 by philothea
Old_Joe Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 I've heard of it. Estimates vary on amount of oil we have left at our disposal.
Laudate_Dominum Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 I've heard of this off and on over the years, with different figures about when it will run out.I don't know how true it is. I've heard figures as low as 30 years, but I wonder if they are basing it just off of existing oil supplies and not taking into account that people are still finding new oil reserves in places. I'm sure there is still tons of oil availble in more remote places, like maybe under the ocean or in antarctica. The price of oil may go up considerably in the future (I'm sure it will), but this will probably just stimulate a gradual conversion to other fuel sources so that by the time oil does run out, we will be ready for it. Just a theory though. I don't really know too much about it.

It is useful as an emergency for war times and to try and balance the economy only.
Socrates Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 Some time last year, there was thbis population-control debate, where this pro-population control person kept arguing from some "Peak Oil" website. Seems to me it is an argument used to promote lowering the human population (not enough oil - let's kill more babies!) Mother Jones is a very Left-wing mag. These arguments ignore human ingenuity, and push for radical "population control" as the only solution. They've got a bad political agenda.

The real question is not when wil loil run out, it is 'when will oil production peak'. At the point of the peak, the oil prices will raise constantly without ever dropping thereafter. Imagine having to pay twice the amount you are currently paying for gas? What would this do to your monthly budget? And as oil prices rise, the price of EVERYTHING rises, bexause everything in our modern world is somehow connected to oil (food is delivered by trucks, large sums of power is still generated by burning oil, industry itself runs on oil as a primary source of energy).

It is based on HARD facts, and scientific basis that cannot be argued against. Oil WILL run out, and there exists absolutely no viable energy source to replace it. This spells very hard times to come no matter how you genuinely way things from an educated perspective.

It would have taken about 10 years, and it would have spurred the economy greatly. I don't believe anyone with the power to change things was interested in it, though.

Rather than urge developing new technology, etc., they see increased abortion and contraception as the only "solution."
