An Old School Catholic Message Board

Any Liberal Catholics?

DeeDee

Recommended Posts

This is a board made up of mostly faithful Catholics. We follow the teachings of the Church; it's as simple as that. For the most part, "liberal Catholics" aren't very faithful -- they tend to pick and choose the parts of Catholicism that they want to follow. Liberal Catholics have an "anything goes, as long as it feels right" attitude toward things.

Basically, liberalism within religion means dissent.

[quote name='DeeDee' date='Jul 28 2005, 05:10 PM']I seemed to be getting knocked down on phatmass (what does that mean anyway?) for a lot of my views. I grew up in a very liberal Catholic family, where everyone was accepted as being a child of God. I was taught to love my neighbor as Jesus loved us. Yet when I post my views in some of the forums, I get pounced on by holier than though types, quoting scripture and calling me ignorant. I was hoping to find a group of people outside of my circle of friends where I could discuss things about Catholicism and Christianity in general that I find hard to accept. I get the feeling that probably I should find another source. I can't in good conscience change my views even though I know I'm a renegade or rebel. But then, I always have been. I don't take these things lightly, and my beliefs and views are arrived at by prayer and discernment. They just don't seem to fall in step with conservative Catholicism.

We are neither rebellious or renegade nor liberal or conservative - we are faithful Catholics following the teachings of the Magisterium.
We seek to form our consciences WITHIN the teachings of the Church.

If there is any topic where you would like to discuss the teachings of the Church, please start a discussion on it. :)

Insulting us and running is not very Christ-like :D:

I believe liberalism is a sin, because basically, many liberal minded people open doors to the Evil one. The majority of them are morally and donctrinally Lax., they are for Gay marriage, women priesthood, abortion, and against the infallible Vicar of Christ , and try to justify it.

Was she considering the fact that we dished out scripture a bad thing? Does she think we don't need the Scriptures or what? That kinda sounded funny...

*is ashamed of PM at the moment*

It seems like the heart of what DeeDee was saying is that she has not encountered the charity and caring heart proper to Christians in her experience on this site. While you can't expect too much of this in debates, you would think that this thread at least would manifest it.

I'll probably be called a hypocrite or something for speaking my mind, but I'm just concerned because I don't remember PM being like this.

Peace.

[quote name='DeeDee' date='Jul 28 2005, 03:30 PM']Thanks a lot.. Exactly what I expected. My late husband used to say, "The last Christian was nailed to a cross."  I'm outta here. :biker:

I must agree with Laudate Dominum.... PM has also disapointed me in this thread.

And Futur Nun JMJ makes a very good statement.

Also, we have to remember that on PM, others cannot read your intentions... It's not like having a debate face to face. I think it is important to recognize that some people (especially people who have only started posting, and don't know any of you really yet) may feel attacked. And while it is right to defend the Church, it is wrong to attack confused souls.

And if she felt attack, it's not entirely her fault... she's entitled to her feelings.

Also, I was thinking, obviously, this is a great Phorum for this person to learn to accept the wonderful teachings of our Church. Therefore, the ennemy is probably going to use her feelings against her to trick her into believing that the people on PM are un-charitable....

I think many of you are being unfair. WHile some people (ie Littleless) feed on such abuse (saying things like, 'oh, way to run away like a coward and not prove your point) and continue to post nonsense, other people will feel intimidated and never come back. Which isn't a good thing, because then they go home with no knowledge of the truth.

So, all I am saying is that we don't need 50 people telling one person how stupid they are... We need to be MUCH more understanding. People like DeeDee are being deceived, and they need people who know the Truth to show them the light. And I have to say that, this Thread does not do that what so ever.

She is entitled to her feelings and so are we. You can't expect us to agree with someone just to make them feel good and accepted. We are to preach the truth with love. Some people are not ready for the truth yet

Thy Geekdom Come

Did this person even have a chance to explain her views? Couldn't we have dealt with her patiently?

Some would say I've gotten soft, but we need more prudence...we know where we stand. We don't need to jump around and shout about our orthodoxy and how bitterly we oppose heterodoxy. Let your yes mean yes and your no mean no...I don't see the point in adding so much emphasis and jumping to conclusions.

If there was heterodoxy (I'm not familiar with the views held by the poster), then with patient dialogue, we could have won a soul for Christ. However, in our ardent desire to act for orthodoxy, there was a great deal of talk about orthodoxy, what it is, and *that* it's better than heterodoxy...but there was little talk of *why* orthodoxy is correct, there was little of trying to engage in discussion over the issues involved, there was little more than saying "orthodoxy is right and heterodoxy is wrong."

A long time ago, I was heterodox...very heterodox. It was because I didn't know Church teaching. If someone had simply jumped around shouting, "you're wrong, we're right," then I would not be where I am today. Luckily, however, I had the faith explained to me, not the politics pushed on me. We must enlighten and discipline, not blind and torture.
