Laudate_Dominum Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 So, what is this about? Thanks. I would give the train my last For a ride to the sunlit coast To watch crests of waves struggling to maintain Falling face first at the edge of an invincible horizon To stretch out and grasp at the barren silhouette Which burns relentlessly upon the heart of the moment To fall headlong into the inevitability of the ocean's grasp Enveloped in the deep fluid pool Living and unscathed To find myself in another castle Risen from the depths of salt water death Tossed and turned here and there Emerging radiance slicing open the horizon A room of stone with many windows Enclosing warmth and the smell of bread The taste of wine on my lips And your pure sun upon my face
IcePrincessKRS Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 I think Annie may be right... its full of beautiful imagery.
It seems to be most closely talking about the new life experienced by being baptized into the Catholic Church.
I would give the train my last For a ride to the sunlit coast To watch crests of waves struggling to maintain Falling face first at the edge of an invincible horizon
You give up all for the Christian life. The waves seem to indicate the faithful struggling to reach the infinite God. It can also refer to the immense life of the Spirit, overflowing, into which we are cast.
To stretch out and grasp at the barren silhouette Which burns relentlessly upon the heart of the moment To fall headlong into the inevitability of the ocean's grasp Enveloped in the deep fluid pool Living and unscathed
The Baptism itself. One finds himself changed, caught in the duality of fire and water. The Living Spirit burns as it refines us as in the fire. However, we emerge from the water alive, even moreso than before.
To find myself in another castle Risen from the depths of salt water death Tossed and turned here and there Emerging radiance slicing open the horizon
Castle=Church. The Light of Christ emerges to illuminate the soul in the life of the new Catholic Christian.
A room of stone with many windows Enclosing warmth and the smell of bread The taste of wine on my lips And your pure sun upon my face
Eucharistic imagery. Bread and wine are obvious references to the Eucharist. Sun/Son homophone reinforces the True Presence of Christ. One might infer it is a morning Mass with light streaming through the stained glass of some Gothic chapel. Another poem mutilated by rational dissection. John Keating (Robin Williams in Dead Poet's Society), Thoreau, et al. would not be amused. That said, I think it's not bad. Maybe my mood is too analytical right now to smell of elderberries on the marrow of life... Watch L_D come out and say it was written by <insert non-Catholic here> Edited August 22, 2005 by scardella
Didacus Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 Where does this poem come from? I for myself, would say it is about hope, if not of heaven, then of something better. But hope of heaven is well said and I think sums up pretty much everything. thus let I second annie's comment: Hope of Heaven
annie Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 The only trophy I ever won was for 11th grade English....

Most of the themes mentioned are there, but none of them are the real meaning of the poem. It is supposed to be about the experience of love (romantic love from man to woman) in the grace of Christ. Well, the initial call to love anyway. Those other things are analogies I suppose. The death thing relates to "finding oneself" in a "sincere gift of self" or a kind of kenosis, among other things. Hope for heaven is plain enough. The Paschal Mystery plays in because it is the pattern in many ways. It's not the greatest poem in the world, it's just recent and short and I wanted to see if my current style actually communicates what I intend. Ack! It's fine.. I don't want to be too scrupulous. At least the main themes seem to be conveyed well enough. Thanks peeps.
Noel's angel Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 way over my head. I was gonna have a stab at it, but I'm dumb, because everyone knows that its SO easy to get A Levels now...

Even after knowing the intended theme, I still have a lot of trouble seeing that. I still think it's a decent poem, though. Edited August 22, 2005 by scardella

The poem is just to vague and mixed up.. (ok, I feel bad bashing it)

It's about a specific interior experience of romantic love so it is both spiritual and elusive. I suppose.
Noel's angel Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 don't bash anything that comes from your heart because that's where the most beautiful things come from
