This is not a first offense. It is just a first offense that was caught by the world, bringing scandal to the Church throughout the world. Making the church a laughing stock. This isn't a high school girl. She's 29.
Extra ecclesiam nulla salus Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 see this is why WYD is a bad idea. people act stupid there.
Noel's angel Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 people act stupid because of themselves, they cannot, at the age of 29, blame it on WYD
StColette Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 You know that picture kinda looks like they are swing dancing. Not that I agree with what she did, but it does really look like they were swing dancing. Yall know what I am talking about? As for getting carried away, each of us is or has been guilty of getting carried away and falling into temptation and sin. I'll be the first to admit that I've got carried away from time to time especially when I was younger. We must remember that all religious people, nuns, priests, brothers, etc. are human, just like we are. They are just as capable of making mistakes just as the rest of us. Yes, they are supposed to set an example of the Church, but above all they are human as well and can do things that are really all that great. But we as lay people are to set the same example for the Church, just as the religious people do. And we make plenty of bad judgements! I forgive the Sister for what she did.
Piccoli Fiori JMJ Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 That picture looks like there was some bad timing on the photographers part and then the paper just exagerrated on it...
Carnanc Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 yea, what she did was wrong, but I really don't see why this has to be reported. there is so much else they could have said about WYD instead.
Piccoli Fiori JMJ Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 Like people making out during Mass... ick...
Extra ecclesiam nulla salus Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 you guys are right lets all get are plenary's and go make out during mass at WYD. disgusting. WYD is horrible full of rock n' roll. and the like.
HomeTeamFamily Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 i almost fault the other guy as much if not more than the nun.....he needed to recognize what was going on as well
StColette Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005
WYD is horrible full of rock n' roll. and the like.
Not all rock n roll is bad! The behavior of some of the young people at WYD does not make it bad! You wanna have that attitude then all cops are bad because a cop was arrested the other day for drugs. Or all priests are bad because of the ones that have been accused of sexual abuse. I can keep going. The actions of some do not reflect upon the actions of all or upon the event that is at hand. I pray for those have made bad decisions, especially at WYD, but I'm not going to condemn WYD when I've seen the good fruits that it has brought to the world. There's nothing wrong with WYD, other than the mistakes that some individuals have made. The Church does not forbid the youth from having fun, as long as it is moral fun, which is part of what WYD gives to the youth. It gives them a chance to meet other young people like themselves and rejoice and have fun with their Faith. Pope John Paul II always told the youth to spread and share their faith with the enthusiaism that is part of the nature of a young person. Yes we are to be serious at times, but not all the time. . "With your youthfulness, put your mark of hope and enthusiasm, so typical of your age, on the third millennium that is just beginning."
Piccoli Fiori JMJ Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 I don't like to say this, but I think for some, WYD is just being able to say "I saw the Pope" there is no real spiritual change, which is what a pilgrimage is all about. I know there are many faithful who were there as true pilgrims, but it was very hard to be changed with those around who were not being the pilgrims that they should have been. This Sister is a young person still. We are all humans, we strive for sanctity, but we all fall. We must all look back at our lives. We aren't all Saints, we will not be until we end our earthly pilgrimage and arrive in heaven. We must not be the ones to judge. We must be the ones to forgive. Personally, the events at WYD were very unfruitful for me, simply because it has been over a year since I have made it to the sacrament of reconciliation. It kills me when people tell me that I am the holiest person they know, when I know that on multiple occasions, I have chosen the pains of Hell over the forgiveness that would come from a few moments of humiliating shame. Honestly, I have no idea where I am going with this, but I just ask that rather than pointing out hte speck in anothers eye, that we can look into the mirror of Christ, and see the log in our own eyes. Do not let yourselves percive yourselves as Holy quite yet. We must all be hu,mble and accept that we are all sinners who are not worthy of the joys of heaven. But because Christ had died for us, we are made worthy and we must never take this for granted! Let us all become humble servants of the Lord, and let us not be swayed by the world and its earthly pleasures. When we loose the focus in heaven, which will happen, we must acknowledge our faults, and work to become better. Never compare your faults as lesser than those of others. Let us not fall into the traps of Satan. I pray that we may all live in humbleness, aware that we are not worthy of heaven, but because of His Passion and Death, He cleans us again and again, to make us worthy to be with Him forever! Pax. *I had to make an edit... I needed to reword part of it...
franciscanheart Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 World Youth Day should not be discredited because of certain individuals or even individual experience. I know first hand that World Youth Day can have a huge impact on a young person's life and can help them make huge strides towards Christ. The actual events of World Youth Day are varied and when necessary, toned down. Concerts and adoration occur at the same time in different places. There is a time for Mass and there are no rock concerts then. Another thing I think people sometimes forget is that not everyone goes just to the WYD festivities. We stayed with host families from a parish and got to know a whole handful of wonderful people. We shared daily Mass and we had adoration. We saw different churches, Cathedrals, and shrines. I got to do the stairs at St Josephs Oratory! World Youth Day can and does provide many youth with experiences that help to further their relationship with Christ. Whether or not each a person chooses to accept those opportunities and chooses to grow is not something that anyone else has control over. Let's stop bashing WYD and the people who have made poor choices there. WYD has not brought them to make those decisions but rather they chose to act that way on their own. WYD does not condone such behavior and we don't either. We are all in agreement about what is appropriate and what is not. Let's leave it at that and look at what positives have been brought to the world because of this wonderful endeavor.
Old_Joe Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 Having been at WYD 2002 myself, I can say that this is not the first time something like this has happened. Are there people who are dressed in what might be considered revaling attire? Yes. Are there people whose behavior is scandalous? Yes. Does this mean that WYD is a bad idea? NO! Individual behavior doesn't necessarily define the group as a whole. I personally know people who went to WYD because the drinking age in Canada was lower than the US. It is sad that people will do these things. Pray for them. Despite all of this, I still had fun at WYD. I made friends with people who I still talk to.
Apathy Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005
St. Francis de Sales would have to disagree with you. In The Introduction to the Devout Life, he talks about how you shouldn't attend dances unless it is absolutely necessary, and then dance as little as possible. For a nun to dance in such a manner is scandalous. That said, the media really has to work to find stuff to hate about the Church.
Saints? They sound too much like my GrandPa for me to really ask them anything. They're too zealous for my taste anyways. Well, at least they seem to share GrandMa Love's attitude and they don't slap me in the back of the head. I did asked GrandPa Wisdom about this though, and he went on another tangent - of course. Talking about how if I had my way for this then I'll have my way for that and then we'll have this and that before we know it and blahblahblah... I think he even mentionned same sex marriage in there too, I think. Whatever, I don't really listen to him. Why do I keep asking him these things? PS: Sloth says dancing takes far too much effort for it to be fun anyways. I think he says hi too. sorta says hi. I think he means hi. Oh well, time for a nap.

Thats what I was going to say. I know that they should have been a little more careful with their dance moves (not saying that they shouldn't have danced at all, since I don't know what context it was in), but that particular move is a common swing dance bit. Its not like she was grinding and pole dancing---which is what I thought when I read the thread title. It still doesn't excuse her for doing it, but I certainly don't think its quite as horrific as it could have been.

When I read "dirty dancing" on the topic I was expecting something a whole lot different. That move is definitely a swing dance move, at least from my judgement.
prose Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005
That picture looks like there was some bad timing on the photographers part and then the paper just exagerrated on it...
Yup. And WYD has many, many good fruits come from it. In fact, I think it is one of the most positive events of the Catholic Church today. Just my 2 cents.

In retrospect I would agree that it is likely sensationalism by the press, though I do think she should have been a bit more reserved. As for world youth day, I've been to one and, sure with a million youth there it's not all going to be perfect. They really had to dig to find anything to slander the Church on. These events are a great boost and encouragement to the youth of the world. I hope they continue for a long time to come.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 swing dancing or not, as a sister in a habit, that particular move (jumping on a man) is probably not befitting a woman of her vocation... it's just a bit scandalous, even if nothing more than dancing was meant by it.
