I think I'm going to skip church today
But what's wrong with protestants doing home church? I'd invite a friend or two over, gather in His name, read a little something from the Bible, sing a hymn or two and maybe even break some bread.

You just get more usually if you attend a service at a healthy regular church than if you just do something on your own with maybe one or two friends. Granted there are exceptions, but that is part of why I specified healthy church.

How long are your normal church services? Maybe you can try a Catholic Mass - they normally are not more than 1 hour.

In general, though, you need to think about this. If God is truly your number one priority in life, one must arrange their schedules around making it to church on Sunday. For that reason, I would never take a vacation to anywhere where I couldn't make it to Mass on Sunday or a holy day of obligation (meaning any trips to mainland China would have to be during the week and not the weekend).

Same for the Christian and Missionary Alliance church. And I don't know when the local Catholic Church has Sunday Services.

If you are living on or near a college campus, they probably have a Newman Center that offers Mass.

Go to a Catholic Church! It doesn't last all day!

Um, you were too late. I would have to have dinner totally scheduled on sudden notice for me to go to church when you posted that. I had to go to work. I just got back and got changed and stuff.

it's commandment number 3. It is a mortal sin to break it. That means it kills the grace in your soul and blocks grace from coming in. It severely damages your soul to break such a comandment.. that's all I'm going to say, that's all that needs to be said. there are exceptions for real emergencies, sickness or having to help someone in danger or complete inability to go. but there is no exception for convenience.

Exodus 20:8 “ Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.

1. Remember (check)

2. Keep holy (I don't see how only attending a service determines whether a day is holy or not a day is kept holy)

3. Do no work (went in only for training, need to study or I'll be bored and restless, wow, if not for church, Friday could well be my sabbath)
Rest (what I did instead of getting out the door early for church)

3b. [Oh, and if sickness is an exception, that is something I have developed a genuin respect for with regards to the need for physical rest, at least after being sick five times in a school year, but hey if not wearing out one's immune system so that one gets sick and coughs and has a sore throat... is a mere matter of convenience, then I see no reason why making oneself sick in part by going instead of just resting should be any different from going while sick. Either way it's poor stewardship of the life and health that God gives us. Various arguments could be made either way, but the long and short end of it as I see comes to that.] I had a migrain last night and could not sleep much. Oh, and feel free to pray for my sick manager. The other one called off so he has to work an 11 hour shift today.

4. I don't see mortal sins the same way you do. I'm not catholic.

you are Christian. I will treat you as a Christian. Christians go to Church on sunday, otherwise they are refusing God's grace in mortal sin.

we remember on sundays the way Christ taught us to remember: in the breaking of the bread as His Body. we keep Sunday Holy the way Christ taught us to keep things holy, by getting together and loving one another and focusing on God through the Eucharist.

it must be a sickness that really prevents you from going without putting yourself in danger of worse illness and putting everyone else in danger of catching it. a stuffy nose or a slight headache is not a legitimate excuse.

Um, I thought you considered us as not having the Eucharist. Only one church that I know the location and service time of did I not know if there was going to be the Lord's supper and at the latter one at Calvary Chapel I do not know. I know that it would not be at the morning Calvary chapel services.

On your former point, we shall simply have to remian to a certian extent in disagreement.

The way I see it is, if you can spend one hour on PM you can spend one hour with God.
Go to an early service. Like 7:00 a.m.
Don't let the devil win. That's what he wants...not for you to go to Mass.
If you are severely ill, then that's another story.
I know that it's important to go and I should probably think of it more that way, but against the advice of two respected people here, I think I want to get other stuff done.  All semester I have felt like when homework is due I'm just barely getting it done and I won't know until 3 p.m. how much I need to worry about getting however much of probably about 6 and a half hours of homework done that needs to be done when I get home again.  If I can get more done earlier this weekend, then I won't feel as much like I am just getting by and it will be easier to get more done earlier and I'll have less excuse if I don't get it done.  The nature of that reasoning then should make it less valid next weekend and I won't feel as anxious about getting my work done.  Thoughts?  Reactions? Scoldings?

God gives you 168 hours in a week. The least you could do is to spend one of those hours woshipping Him. Now, I know you can say "well I can worship God through my work." This is true. you CAN worship God in many ways. But God specifically wants us to have a day of rest, and he wants us to dedicate that day to praising Him for the mighty things He's done for us!

"You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out thence with mighty hand and outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day." (Deuteronomy 5:15)

God wants us to remember how much he loves us. Without Christ's sacrifice on the cross, we are slaves to sin. Jesus died for us to free us from the slavery of sin so that we can become adopted children of God! The purpose of the Sabbath is resting (we are humans and we can't work 24/7 or else we go crazy) and remembering our covenant with God through Christ.

Now, you might say "Well, I can worship God just fine on my own! I don't need to go to church. I've got my personal relationship with Jesus Christ."

Well, going to church is a sign of the covenant you have with God. God doesn't just have a covenant with you, he has it with all the baptized! Therefore, it is important for all Christians to gather on Sunday to express their covenant with God. Having a personal relationship with Christ is great, but you're not the only one. God has a covenant w/ all believers through Christ. As Catholics, we believe that the most perfect expression of this covenant is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, where we recieve Christ's Body and Blood.

It doesn't matter how much homework you have. Go to church. It's the least you can do, compared to what Jesus did for you.

You do realize that has been irrelevent for hours? The day is almost over. this thread was only in reference to this morning. And just because I didn't go to church on Sunday does not mean I won't on other days of the week. FYI, I am not nor have I ever been one of those "I don't need a church" people.

You keep saying that it is a day of rest. Going to church is a spiritual rest, but it is not a physical rest. Usually, the spiritual energizing surpasses the physical wear. Every once in a great while, for some reason it is the other way around.

Realizing now how tired I am (or more specifically about 15 minutes ago), if I had to go to church right now I would not because I plan in being in bed before it would be over. Friday night was abnormal. I can't sleep in that much on Saturdays. Saturday night I had a migrain after work which ended at 10 p.m. Migrains also have a post-dromal phase where the migrainer is more tired. Sunday morning I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep after less than 6 hours of sleep. I am really tired tonight. My eyes are dry, my head hurts a little, especially my right eye, and it takes highly unusual circumstances for me to feel this tired.

well, obviously I knew my reply was a little late, but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents on skipping church. Sunday is a day of physical, mental and spiritual rest. It doesn't mean we shouldn't put any effort into anything, but it is important to refrain from unnecessary work.

I'm sorry you've been feeling sick lately, I will pray for you. Hope it gets better before next sunday!

Thanks. I'm not technically sick and I think that is where differing views come in. Sudden weather shifts are migrain triggers and we went from 100 degrees F in the afternoon to chilled and rainy in about two days. I was also just feeling a little abnormal with time and food and stuff and so I'm more worn out. I appreciate your good intentions in posting and I hope I wasn't snappy in my prior post. I tend to be more that way when I am tired or emotional or whatever.

Good night.

Well...

It's too late to shake my finger at you. This is why Catholics intercede. You're about to get hugged by a Saint. Guess which one. :P:

I think that the problem is that 1 hour out of 1 day will not impact your work or anything. Rather, time spent on Phatmass could be better served in church for one hour or so. If you establish criteria by which you can miss church, you will suddenly find yourself meeting those criteria more often. :o
Also, keep in mind that the work of this life is fleeting and won't mean anything once you're dead. Your salvation is infinitely more important than school.

Rationalizations=excuses, which you have made in abundance while using up precious church time on PM. :(
