scardella Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 (edited)
$400 What teenager has that kind of money... "Is it you or parents in that tax income bracket?" Highschoolers are morons... BTW I net less than 400 dollars a week right now...
Letsee ~$40 for the tickets, ~$100 for tux + flowers, ~$50 for the dinner (for 2), ~$100 or so, for my portion of the limo bus <-- not sure if that is accurate; forgot how much they cost. That leaves $10 for drinks, at least. If the after party is free/cheap (at a friend's house or put on by the school), and you're not drinking alcohol, then it's not what I would consider extravagant. However, you could certainly get by more cheaply, too. (Have dinner @ a person's home and/or drive your own/parent's car, in particular.) Well, I paid for it, and I think it was less than 300. (See above.) It was 6-7 years ago, so my mind might be fuzzy, and I was trying to account, somewhat, for inflation. I never had any sort of allowance, either. I just figured that senior prom only happened once (At my highschool, there was a junior prom for the juniors, but freshman & sophomores only could go to homecoming). You could easily get that sort of money by working. If you net $5/hr, then it would be 60-80 hours, perhaps a month - 6 weeks part-time. It just depends on how much priority it gets. prose Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Good for that principal... Maybe it will help people to rethink what is actually going on at proms... We don't have "proms" per se in Alberta, but we have the grad stuff too, and it is sooooooooooo expensive, and rowdy. I went to a publis school that actually sponsored 2 after-grad events "safe grad" - which was alcohol and everything until the wee hours of the morning supervised by parents... and "super grad" which was alcohol free. Almost everyone went to safe grad. What I don't understand is why parents are allowing and PAYING for their MINORS to get drunk... Isn;t this illegal??!?!? No one really liked the "grad" part (with the gowns and stuff) Everyone just wanted to leave the lame dance and do the other thing. I went to a private party, and that was bad enough.
Jaime Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 It doesn't have to be that way. When I worked in ministry, I would put on an after prom party for anyone who would want to come. The last year I did it, we had over 100 kids that chose to come to church for a party then hotels and sex and drinking.

theculturewarrior Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I've only been to formal dances at my University. I like better that way. (I probably would have gotten beaten up at the Prom). That said, at one such formal dance, my gin blossom turned a deeper shade of violet! It's forgiven!

Remembering my Catholic High School dances and proms, I think that they have become pagan events.
They were originally meant to be 'holy' dances?
Philippe Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 i'm going to my prom and i'm going nuts, i'm actually hitting up every dance, its gonna be sweet!

Tony Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 I didn't go to prom, I didn't care.. I only saw it as paying a ton of money to listen to music I know I wouldn't like. Not my idea of fun.
ofpheritup Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 (edited)
Tickets to my prom were almost $400 a pair (and this was over 7 years ago), my dress was $150, my part of the limo was almost $200, plus you need to buy shoes, get your hair and nails done, pay for whatever activity you are doing after prom, etc. It was alot of money! I think they can really reduce the prices of these things if they wanted to. They don't need to be held in really fancy places for one thing.
YIKES.... My prom tickets cost $40. I bought my dress from K-Mart. I already had shoes. My mom did my hair, I did my makeup and nails. My boyfrend drove us there. Total bill for the evening.....$77. My activities after the prom was that a group of us just "made rounds" to our homes and our parents fed us. We hung around for awhile and then headed off for the next house. We planned it out with them before hand. We eventually got "home" the next afternoon. Safe, happy and fat. I had fun at the Prom but I had more fun after. Whatever happened to having them in the school gym? Edited October 20, 2005 by ofpheritup

keighters Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 i have two friends... one went to kellenberg last year... ones a senior this year. the one who graduated spend over $500 only on her dress...then another $1000 for everything else... including a weekend in some hotel with 6 other people i asked the senior how she feels about it.. she said she's so over it not happening... that its all for the better this way. she doesn't mind not having the prom if it means that souls wont be destroyed.. i think shes right.
jasJis Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 My daughter went to the prom for less than $150 for the both of them. It's just a high-school dance, it's not your wedding. To spend more tan $400 has got to be some sort of sin of gluttony. The girls did each other's hair and nails. Most bought dresses on sale. They guys did not have to rent tuxes, suits were fine. They drove cars they owned after a good wash/wax/vac. And by the way, not everyone has to dance obscenely. It's unfortunate that the school canceled the Prom. I would rather have seen a Prom with Christian morality. Songs you can dance to. Semi-formal with a frowning on conspicuous wealth. Well chaperoned. We can have both fun and moraltiy.

zabbazooey Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 I went to christmas prom (i dropped out so i never got to go to a regular one), but I made the whole thing birthday/christmas present from the entire family (my bday is on xmas) I don't even know how much we spent. I was way younger then and I think somehow I knew I wasn't going to be there for my prom.

Especially if it's swing music and Mr. Sinatra and "dance contest" songs... I remember back in the day... "Intergalactic" was the traditional dance contest song... I know it's just showing off, but it was fun. BUT NO LINE DANCING!!! (Although country is not universally banned; just line dancing.)
