And by the way, not everyone has to dance obscenely.  It's unfortunate that the school canceled the Prom.  I would rather have seen a Prom with Christian morality.  Songs you can dance to.  Semi-formal with a frowning on conspicuous wealth.  Well chaperoned.  We can have both fun and moraltiy.

This is "more than do-able" if enough people speak up.

Ultimately what I would like to see happen is that you have the Prom in the gym. Then afterwards go to each others homes and raid their refrigerators. IT WORKS. I had the greatest time of my life...literally.

Set it up with your friends parents beforehand.
You sit around talk, play games, eat, you are safe and your parents aren't worrying about you. Everyone goes home safe.

EDIT

It is from a Youth Minister turned teacher at the Highschool.

Ahhh tanks...

Here is quote from the principle (who rocks my socks, though I think this should have been done earlier) to a parent in a letter obtained by the AP...
12) Aside from the bacchanalian aspects of the prom - alcohol/sex/drugs -
there is a root problem for all this and it is affluence. Affluence changes people. Too
much money is not good for the soul. Our young people have too much money. Sounds
simple, but it is true. When Jesus said that it was very hard for a rich man to enter the
kingdom of heaven, it shocked his hearers and it still shocks us. Wealth is powerful, not
only in terms of possessions, but in being possessed by it. Wealth changes personalities,
priorities, principles. The prom has become the occasion of conspicuous consumption -
from dress, to limosines, to entertainment.
I really enjoyed my prom....

My date was one of my best guy friends that I've known since we were kids and we had a blast. But then again, my group of friends were the "good" kids at our public school with over 600 ppl in our class, and we have a different definition of fun than most of the others. And they had a fake casino...and lots of food...and a chocolate fountain!! The most expensive part was the ticket, but I got my dress for cheap and did my own hair/nails/makeup.... soo yeah. It doesn't have to be a big, bad, expensive thing. It'll be what you make it.

Man! Do I have prom stories! I've probably spent less than $100 for going to both of my proms (my boyfriend went to a different school and was a year ahead of me). My dress was $40 I think, yay for clearances!

The first prom, at his school, had really crappy music and such. To entertain ourselves, we played with the table decorations for hours on end, and hung out in the courtyard, trying to pull old christmas lights from the trees. Met a guy I went to school with who ate his boutinneire, and asked nicely if he could have some petals from ours. (that guy is now a pastry chef at a fancy hotel!)

My prom was fancier, and only had about 4 good songs. I don't understand people who spend hundreds of dollars for one night... Its not like you'll ever wear that $600 prom dress again in your life...
