StatingTheObvious Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 I'm back after being suspended for my sarcastic objection to using the work 'pimp'. What's up with that word? A 'pimp' is somebody who lives a luxurious lifestyle by running prostitutes. I am offended with 'pimp my ride' and the use of the word. When did we become so worshipful of materialism that how we get it doesn't matter and it's okay to be 'pimping' or have your ride 'pimped out' that having material wealth is more honorable than how we got it?
theculturewarrior Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Me too. "Pimp" means child sex slavemaster to me.
Proud2BCatholic139 Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Pimp, it's a 'dirty' word in my mind.
Cow of Shame Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 (edited) 'Pimp' has become associated with ridiculous flamboyancy and awful dress sense. Just as "gay" is now a derrogatory term for homosexuals, "f@ggot" is no longer a cigarette butt, and "n!gger" is no longer an acceptable term to apply towards blacks, "pimp" has transcended it's original meaning. If you want to be offended by it, go ahead, but it's become part of our mainstream culture & is more of a joke than anything else. My mom said pimp once....and boy was it funny. Its kind of funny when you take it literally.
Cow of Shame Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 oops..forgot to proofread the post to catch the automatic edits & retype them so the system would find them 'acceptable' lemme see if I can fix it
Emotion Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 its just a word .... jeesh dont exaggerate over it
Snarf Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 For Halloween 2000, we had a Finnish exchange student staying with us and we just dressed him in random garments we found about the house. We told him that he could explain himself as being a pimp, and it took several minutes to explain what the word meant. In the end he just consulted his bilingual dictionary and started cracking up. I can only imagine the cultural barriers not considered by the lexicographer.
Cow of Shame Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 (edited) Heh...a friend of mine dressed as a pimp for Halloween & we took some pictures of him. Later, another friend with small children came over & saw the pictures. "What's he dressed as?" inquired one little urchin "Uuhhhh," says me, never really the quick thinker "He's a clown, right?" piped up a sibling "Right! Exactly! A clown!" I grasped at that like an alcoholic for a bottle of Absolut Edited October 21, 2005 by Cow of Shame
Nathan Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 It's "cool" to be a pimp these days. Strangely, very few self-proclaimed pimps these days have ever actually met a prostitute, much less employed one.
Thumper Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 (edited) According to www.acronymfinder.com, PIMP is an acronym for . . . Paper in My Pocket Pee(ing) In My Pants Personal Internet Mail Processor Pipeline Into Motion Pictures Pirates in Men's Pants (Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas) Plug-In Mini Packager Pluribus Interface Message Processor Positive Intake Manifold Pressure Project for Improvement of Management Practices Prometheus Internet Mail Program Personally, I think PIMP in reference to "Pee(ing) in My Pants" should replace LOL on PM. : Edited October 22, 2005 by Thumper

jasJis Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 I HATE the word pimp and how it's used casually. As a brother to 4 sisters, husband, son, and father to 2 daughters, I find it highly offensive and demeaning to women in general. It's so sexist and plain rude. I don't get it about it being about flashy and stuff. The connotation to me is all about treating women as sex objects and male domination. It's more than offensive, it's disturbing.
