ReinnieR Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005
Seriously??? I tolerate no culture that refers to women as Bs or Ws or any other derogatory attitude that accompanys it.
cmom you are right i'm not gonna argue with you on that but it seems derogatory to us but they do not mean it in that sense "B's" and "W's" are merely an expression to them that and used daily you might have heard the "term my b" when a person is referring to his girlfriend which i think none of us would call our girlfriend/fiance/wife that but like i said it's a different culture (i don't know if i'm making sense to everybody)

photosynthesis Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 what about the word, "papist"? I have some Catholic friends who have shirts that say "Papist" on them, in big letters. In the past (and i don't know, maybe now?) that word was used as a derogatory term for Catholics, but I see Catholics taking it back.

i never said it was acceptable but anyways nevermind you win i was just stating my opinions on it because it sounded like a whine over an MTV show and the use of the word "pimp" all i'm saying is this culture uses a lot of words in the english language and it does not mean the same thing
Philippe Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 ya like for example as stated above... crib means house in ghettology... i think pimp has a different ghettological meaning as well :\
termitescoming4u! Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 (edited) well the word "pimp" is very rude and derogatory towards women they way it's used in American culture [don't know what it means in other cultures]. Therefore it's not acceptable to use it in addressing anyone American or in America. We surely can do better than that. Edited October 22, 2005 by termitescoming4u!
BC4Life Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 i think it one of the many words in the english language that go thru changes. thats why latin is the best language, it never changes. i mean look at the word "stoned" it use to be term meaning a way of dying, now it means getting high. along with "knocked up" and "gay" i mean, seriously, have you ever seen a "gay computer" or a "gay baseball team" ? no of course not, but thats just the way english is. its unfortunate but what can you do

At least here. And in other places I am sure. Here it is (most sadly) still acceptable for a white person to call a black person n!gger. Even to their faces.

jasJis Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Cow, You're just playing with semantics. The word 'crib' is a morally neutral term. A 'pimp' isn't. A pimp exploits women as sex objects. To try and twist it into a morally neutral word doesn't fly, anymore than a white person can use the 'n-word' in public. The sub-culture that uses b!tch and wh0re to describe women and pretend it isn't demeaning is bullsh*t. And it isn't really a different culture. It's not like they come from a different country all together. There may be environmental nuances, but they can't help but interact with the greater and real culture. To be a seperate culture, then it wouldn't insert it's values and words into mainstream. MTV's "Pimp my Ride" is an offensive name. Since when is the standard of it being on TV define that it isn't offensive?

I swear I must have "slept" thru it. "Relatively deragatory" is that anything like "a little pregnant?" Either it is or it isn't. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD (literally) AND FOR EACH OTHER....GET A CLUE. These words hurt. I fight this battle everyday in school. Yes, they are being "culturally" used. And the people in the culture they are being used in get hurt. OKAY LISTEN UP.....The person who said "Stick and Stones may break my bones, BUT WORDS WILL NEVER HURT ME. " Was probably deaf !!! I'm just guessing. Words have power, either negative OR positive, but very rarely both. Keep in mind whatever the rationale for choosing words is. We are going to be judged by them.
termitescoming4u! Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 (edited) well, that's true. be wary of the words you use conveying a message because they may come back to hurt you and can be interpreted in many ways. a little advise this is. Edited October 23, 2005 by termitescoming4u!
