Does a priest's salary vary from diocese to diocese? How much do priests typically make in the US?

A friend and I were discussing that we have always been curious about this the other day, and both asked priests we knew, but none of them felt comfortable discussing it (because several people from our parish have expressed concerns over the pastor's new car purchase after he's been cutting back on programs because the parish is struggling financially... but my friend and I both realize that the priest's salary is a fixed income separate from the parish funds-- for the most part).

So.. does anyone know???

Yeah, but priests only work one hour a week, right?

J/K

BTW, secular (diocesan) priests may get a small salary, but religious priests get zilch! :)

The normal thing is that the salary of a priest is independent from the economic situation of his parish, I have understood that the salary changes according to the different dioceses and the situation of every priest, some of them realize some gainful occupation with the knowledge of his bishop and they do not need the salary of his diocese.

I found a thing online that said in the US it ranges from 15-19 thousand a year, but it wasn't a religious source, so I wasn't sure if it was trustworthy.

Our preist has an engineering degree as well. So he could be out making tons of money. I thank God he isn't.

Not to sound harsh but... as rev points out, no mortgage and no childcare costs. Those are the expenses in my life...

As for having a ThD and not making the big bucks, that's not completely uncommon either. Besides, doesn't the diocese pay for that, too?

I don't think any of our priest have gotten salaries. I remember one of our priest asked for a car if any one was willing to getting rid of one and he got a pretty decent one...
Doesn't the church pay for a priest to get a house when he comes to a new parish?

A priest's education is paid for by the diocese, I believe.

The pay isn't much but the retirement is out of this world!

As a full time Youth Director I made 21,000, although I had two degrees and a most of my Masters done, and a family, and School debt...mmm

Our priest (in Canada) makes $1200/month. BUT, he has his living expenses (rent) paid on top of that.

I make more as a youth minister than he does as a priest.

AND, in our diocese, it is cet and public knowledge, so all you would have to do was phone the diocese office and ask, and they would tell you.

The priest is not being a priest for the money but for the service. Of course, as others have pointed out, we don't have the same expenses others would have, and so the little bit that we get is more than enough.
