Fides_et_Ratio Posted July 16, 2006 Author Posted July 16, 2006 (edited) Some of the influential authors are troubling... On another note. I asked another priest-friend of mine about it, and he simply responded that he firmly believes that priests are overpaid considering all the things already taken care of, but that it's his understanding (as my former SD said as well) that priests are expected to save for retirement, live simply, and give the rest to worthy charities... and if he's overpaid he doesn't mind having more to give to worthy causes. God Conquers Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 I have a priest friend (diocesan) in the Netherlands who spent some time in Halifax. He says that North American priests have incredibly high salaries compared to their brothers in Europe and around the world. Like 2-3X more. Even diocesan preists in other places live at the poverty line.
qfnol31 Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 ~$13,500 a year in Dallas, including the Bishop. ~$100,000 less a year in Dallas than the Episcopal Bishop.
Guest danielt17 Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 I know that Jesuits can have other jobs but they have to give all the money they make to the Order. Some are skrinks or doctors outside of pastoral stuff, but most teach at universities. Jes, take a vow of poverty, they honestly own nothing, not even the cloths they wear.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted July 16, 2006 Author Posted July 16, 2006 Daniel Most priests of religious orders do not keep any money they make, but all of it goes to the order. Diocesan priests, on the other hand, do receive a salary for their services.
Paladin D Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006
Daniel Most priests of religious orders do not keep any money they make, but all of it goes to the order.
On top of that, it's usually common for religious priests to live in clusters together, while most diocesan priests live by themselves. So at least religious priests when they receive things, they share it amongst themselves.
matthew1618 Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 Today I learned that Priests could have their own cars. ... and now I learned that Priests have salaries. LEARNING IS FUN!!!!!!!!
Theologian in Training Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 I just got my first paycheck...don't worry priests, at least in this diocese, are not making that much. In fact, it is only a little more now than when I got as a deacon. You also have to take into consideration that they take out for Social Security and Medical, again, at least in this diocese. God Bless
clg01 Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006
15?? they have ThD's and PhD's 15?
My vocations director at the seminary makes 17,000. St. Louis is a very catholic community and I would think priests would make a bit more. I saw one post stating that priests in their diocese make 32, 000... I find that amazing if they are making that much. I know priests (diocesan priests, most especially) take of vow of simplicity of life. Even though priest have Theology masters and Ph.D's , I can't imagine one making so much money to live extravangantly. If I were to make that much or nearly that much after I'm ordained, I'd probably give most of it away. I can't imagine making that much. We don't want to be a priest for the money. We must not forget that Jesus tells us to go out with only Sandals and Staff. Depend on others (the Church) for everything else. God, I can't wait to be a priest - only to do His will.

A few priests in my diocese I spoke with mentioned that they didn't know how much they were going to get until their first paycheck came.
Birgitta Noel Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006
I can't imagine one making so much money to live extravangantly.
I'm not picking on you in particular this is more of a general point (and hi from another St. Louisan!) Different salaries may be extravagant in different circumstances and we also have to remember that priests have debts, car payments, have to support elderly parents, etc often as well. And a lot of priests put $ they make back into the Church and give to charity too A dollar figure doesn't tell us much, but then again, neither does the lifestyle of the priest. I knew a priest whose parents were quite well off and had given him a porshe. He sure couldn't have afforded it on his own! (note: PLEASE don't start the debate about "what" a priest should or shouldn't drive Pham!)
DAF Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I was under the impression that priests were on a stipend for food and gas and utilities. I didn't know they got a "salary."

A few priests in my diocese I spoke with mentioned that they didn't know how much they were going to get until their first paycheck came.
Well, technically my first check was not my first but my second. The actual first check was a bit of surprise in a good way. However, the parish accountant informed me that a certain amount a month needs to be taken out for medical and Social Security, thereby causing my first check to become my new first check, which was much less. I am making a little more than what I made as a Deacon. I hope that makes sense. God Bless
I was under the impression that priests were on a stipend for food and gas and utilities. Also, at least in the parishes I have been, there is no stipend for food, you go out and buy what you need, and give the receipts to the finance committee, who thereby reimburses you. The same has also been true with initial living expenses, that is, those things I am not taking with me...for example, chairs, endtables, lamps, curtains, etc. God Bless
