"Life is a Highway" by Tom Petty, also covered by Tom Cochrane and Rascal Flatts

Life's like a road that you travel on
When there's one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend and sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind
There's a world outside ev'ry darkened door
Where blues won't haunt you anymore
Where the brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore
We won't hesitate
To break down the garden gate
There's not much time left today

Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long

Through all these cities and all these towns
It's in my blood and it's all around
I love you now like I loved you then
This is the road and these are the hands
From Mozambique to those Memphis nights
The Khyber Pass to Vancouver's lights

Knock me down get back up again
You're in my blood
I'm not a lonely man
There's no load I can't hold
Roads are rough, this I know
I'll be there when the light comes in
Just tell 'em we're survivors

Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long

Gimme gimme gimme gimme yeah

Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long

There was a distance between you and I
A misunderstanding once
But now we look it in the eye

There ain't no load that I can't hold
Roads are rough, this I know
I'll be there when the light comes in
Just tell 'em we're survivors

Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long

Huh, I didn't realize Tom Petty did that song originally.

I didn't either, until a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I'm all for tough standards for driver's licenses and high/no interstate speed limits.

We raised ours by 5 mph (to 70) on our interstates this year, and apparently there have been 40 percent more fatalities on those roads. It's too early to draw a correlation between the two events, but many people are concerned about the increase.

I do think that higher standards for driver's licenses are a good idea. But, that must be coupled with providing other realistic transportation options for people who don't make the cutoff.

I never took a driving test, except a written test for my permit. I then took driver's education with my parents.

I consider myself a pretty good driver. ;)
Raymond: I'm an excellent driver.
Charlie: When did you drive?
Raymond: I drove slow on the driveway when my dad came to Walbrook.
• 4 weeks later...

Last week there was a car going the speed of traffic on a safe highway under construction. The driver lost control, went over a lane, went through a barrier, and killed a construction worker.

Speed limits are set based on the construction of the road, and while it is normally fine to go over, there is always a chance it's not.

As a police officer told a Priest friend of mine, "How much guilt would you feel if you ran into someone and killed him?" May not be a construction worker, but how do you know there's not going to be anyone there?
