Sampling is the genius of Hip Hop. It's an art of making something new out of something that already exists.

The face of all art is brought low by commercialism. Cinema for the masses is pretty bawdy. That's what people like. But to truly appreciate cinema, you have to have an understanding that goes beyond what movies are opening every week. You wouldn't be taken very seriously if you ranted how cinema is degrading and evil and whatever because it's been hijacked for mass consumption.

Hip Hop, like all art today, struggles between purism and commercialism.

Nevertheless, those who have more than a superficial interaction with the culture know that rap music, and the culture as a whole, is beautiful, creative, innovative, and profound, and of course, entertaining.

That's right, I said it. Hip Hop is beautiful.
Word up my friend. If every other genre was threatend and Hiphop was the only thing left, I would choose hiphop for it can bring the other genres back. You have the one man band, the dj, and the lyricist to get the crowd moving.

The ability to shape and shift another genre of music, and speak poetry in tune with the beat is beautifull to me. It takes alot of skill and talent to do so, if its easy, then try to do it. Try to keep the audience moving to a single person on stage and a dj. It takes great word play, and great beats to keep the crowd on its feet.

Its a great artform that has crossed the seas and has infuenced many people. Yes there is a war between good hiphop and bad hiphop. Back in the day as a child, I remember hearing a plethora of hits. Fun hiphop, party hiphop, story hiphop, gangsta hiphop, and conscience hiphop. It all shared its moment in the sun, but when the market saw that the condition of humanity is attracted to baseness, they cashed in.

Glorifing sex, drugs, and money for many people are attracted to the darkside of humanity. What do we see most of the time on the news? Do they anounce weddings, and births on the news, or do we see death.

Why is death metal and other heavy forms of rock so popular? They too glorify the dark side of humanity. Shot, there are many groups that actually love Satan and proclaim it on records.

But I digress. Hiphop is an artform, hiphop is a culture like sex drugs and rock and roll is a culture, the jazz time scene was a hopping culture as well fulled with sex and drugs as well, and hiphop is here to stay.

I'm a hiphop head till I die fam. HIphop, don't stop!!

I like rap but I don't listen to it hardly at all anymore cause obviously I can't stand the carp that's basically in all of rap today, and I don't want to wade through to find the good stuff. And I don't like protestant christian music so I don't listen to that anymore save one or two examples (Tobymac, 4th Avenue Jones).

Wow. I sure didn't expect a simple rant thread about roomies and my own personal aesthetic opinions would get all that heated with talks about inner city public education, socioeconomics and bed crapping. Who knew.

melikalani just made it, so I'm gonna leave it mostly intact for a little while. In a week or two I'll make some additional modifications, and whatever they are, they won't disappoint.

I was only joking... but somehow I am not surprised.

I listen to everything :) U2, the Beatles, Switchfoot, Seven Sorrows, Rihanna, Shakira, Nightwish, Metallica, the list goes on and on. I love the music Phatmass has, I think it sounds better than a lot of commercial hiphop.

I have strongly held opinions and don't mind expressing them, even if they are subjective.
Posters like Era and desertwoman made great points expressing their subjective opinion, and I've got to respect that, even if I disaggree. (I even think they may have changed my opinion a teensy bit.) But justifying the negative culture that surrounds hip hop was pretty much like pooping on the pillowcase. That's just objectively wrong on many levels.

No problem friend, and we don't like the majority of the foolishness that is out there to proclaims to be hiphop, like many people don't proclaim some of the punk bands that are poppy to be real punk (my friend Gretchen is so deep in the punk culture its crazy. I love hearing about it from her).

It sadness us to see that how influental an art form is is being led down into the sewers. We understand the necessatiy of expressing how one feels in a harmfull situation, but to glorify it is not our cup of tea. To tell a story of a man doing drugs, going to jail, and then reconciling is one thing, but to just talk about the money, the women, and the drama without any sense of punishment is another.

It is leading our youth down a terrible road, and that's why we must re focus hiphop. I love underground turntablism, lyricism, and wizardry. The break dancing, pop locking, and so forth are trying to make a come back, and I want the world to fall in love with this artform. Its time to take out the trash my friends, its time to take out the trash.

Does ANYBODY else on here not like hip hop?

Because...I've come to start seriously hating it. My flatmates play it all the time and I CAN'T STAND IT.
So here, I'll say it:

[b]I DON'T LIKE HIP HOP.

And I'm usually a good speller, too.

Would being doped up on painkillers be an acceptable excuse?
