So I was looking through old threads, and there was a lot of talk about the nightgowns, like when Denise was making hers, and how OLAM Dad should've taken a pic of Sr. Lauren's. :rolling: We're so wierd... so do any of you want me to take a picture of mine?

You know what it reminds me of? Wendy's nightgown in the cartoon Peter Pan. I always liked her nightgown...

WOW, SOMEONE SURE DID HAVE ALOT OF SPARE TIME ON HER HANDS TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND OF COURSE YOU JUST HAVE TO LOVE DAD'S SENCE OF HUMOR!!!! I LOVE YOU TONS DAD!!!!!!!!!!!

haha, I never read that thread but it sounds funny :) sure, pictures are good!

Yes, that's exactly what it looks like, Wendy's PJs. It's a night habit, btw, not a night gown. :P:

But I can't really call it a night habit until I recieve the regular habit can I? Which I'm so excited about!!!

Well, if the postulants wear a dress during the day, why not call it a nightdress?

It's my understanding from the various photos I've seen that PCPA postulants wear what you USAns call a jumper and what I call a sleeveless dress, with a blouse underneath.

To complete the linguistic information, what I refer to as a jumper is probably what USA English speakers call a sweater.

oh thats right, i forgot about the jumper!!! i miss wearing those.......i use to wear them for school back when i was little, the plaid jumpers were ugly but i loved wearing mine all the time!!!!

An OLAM postulant:

OLAM (and most other PCPA community postulants) wear a jumper, blouse, abbreviated veil, and St. Francis/Miraculous Medal.

thanks brendan for the visual!!!! i acutally like the postulants habit for the pcpa's. i think i like it only because it stands out from the other postulants uniforms.

i'll post a pic later of the SSEW postulants uniform.....if i have time

Were you aiming for us to laugh? Because I totally did! You non-USAns are so practical. Gosh a sleeveless dress with a blouse underneath! Where's your imagination?

I hadn't really considered that PCPA had a different looking postulant uniform... from what I've seen, they're all somewhat distinctive. I like that I'll have a veil though.

No, it wasn't meant humourously. Such dresses are called simply "dresses" or "sleeveless dresses" in British English. A certain style of these are known as pinafore dresses or pinnies, but these refer to school uniforms of a certain era. They're nowadays usually associated with "school nights" at discos and other stuff along that train of thought that's completely inappropriate and degrading, even before you consider the nature of this website.

I'm currently doing postgraduate work in linguistics. Whilst English dialects isn't my field, internet communication ensures that you become aware of these features rather quickly.

I also don't think that the PCPA postulant outfit is particularly different from others I've seen. The Lockport and Summit Dominicans have, to my knowledge, a dress with veil. It seems likely that other communities have something similar.

fwiw, they do call it a jumper. I say it instead of them because each postulant only gets one. :)

So Dad,
What do the postulants wear when the jumper is in the wash? Or are they not allowed to wash it? Very curious.

Oh and bye the bye PP: When I was at Cambridge, I had a particular sweater, (in my lingo) which the boys liked. It took me a few weeks to understand why they kept commenting on my "lovely jumper" I thought they were making fun of me!! In the Southern US, jumpers are associated with dowdy old ladies and preschool teachers. (Which was certainly not the look I was going for)

I think they usually wash it at night when they're already in their nightgown (or night habit).

Sr. Mary Gabriel apparently tells alot of people when she's fitting them that they only need to wash it like every six months (she didn't tell me that, though she was adamant that I always wear my apron and put a napkin up when I eat. :lol; ). But Sr. Anastasia said we can wash it more than that. I don't know how often they wash it though.

Actually they're behind on habits too right now, because there are so many novices. A lot of them still only have one, and usually they have two habits.

When I was an undergraduate and a chorister, some of us from the choir were sitting "relaxing" (i.e. when we should have been working) after Chapel one morning, and the topic came up as two of us were exchange students from the US. It ended up in lots of hilarity!
