brendan1104 Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Yes, you're allowed to wonder. Some do, some don't. I think the vast majority- if not all-active sisters nowadays are allowed to, but some cloistered communities still don't approve of it.
brandelynmarie Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Jumper=sweater nappies=diapers crisps=french fries Am I getting this right? I was in Europe for 5 months & the British vs American English was very funny...Sometimes my friends & I would go in circles trying to figure out what the other was saying...
DiscerningSoul Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 The "nightdress" at Lockport is a simple ankle long, long sleeved and hand made with a pocket. They also wear a "nightcap" to cover there heads at night. The poor clares in rockford wear there habits to bed(at least that is what I was told at the time of my visit when I was 27) I wish I had a pattern for it, I would love to make one for myself.
magnificat Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006
i love how in-depth this gets!! okay, i've always wondered. are nuns allowed to shave their legs!? I'd be fine with not doing it...less time & effort! But really... are they allowed to!? Am I allowed to wonder that!?!?
Of course you can wonder! It depends on the order, I think. I know for the Sisters of Life (because someone asked Mother this during Q & A!) it's up to you if you want to or not; basically if it's not done for vanity's sake, it's not particularly problematic. I think someone also asked if the Sisters pluck their eyebrows and besides the vanity issue, Mother said something to the effect of (and I'm very very much paraphrasing), because they're an active order, you don't want people necessarily so distracted by a bush on your face...haha. I guess if you're cloistered and you see the same people day in and day out, they'd get used to it and it wouldn't matter, right?

It's because they rise at night to pray Matins and that's just a lot of changing of clothing so it's much simpler that way. Plus, there's a neat significance to being prepared at any moment to be with Jesus! The postulants only rise for Matins on feast days so they wear a night gown to bed. To complete the linguistic information, what I refer to as a jumper is probably what USA English speakers call a sweater. Love and prayers, PP
in general it is called a jumper yes and it all Likely-hood it's simply that jumper is shorter and americans like simple lanuage it's faster

stuckinamo Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 haha aww! how funny/awkward. i love nuns! sometimes i think people forget that they are people! myself included!! :
Jumper=sweater nappies=diapers crisps=french fries Am I getting this right?
ps: i actually think that crisps are potato chips? my US History teacher last year was from England. (yeah, weird i know. we didn't learn much.) sometimes he would slip up and use his English slang. One day he accidentely pronounced "aluminum" "al-u-minium" (phonetically). Oh, he was lovely! I also found out that crumpets (as in tea and crumpets) are like English muffins here! (woops, i'm a bit -- my bad!!)
puellapaschalis Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 (edited) Continuing the Off-Topic-ness, mea maxima culpa... British English | US English crisps | chips chips | fries jam | jelly jelly | jell-o At JFK I was once asked by some security staff to pronounce the word "aluminium". Upon doing so, and separating out the two last vowels, they erupted into adoring giggles. It only stopped when on chap noted that I was feeling a little weirded out by all this and gave me back my shoes so that I could go down to the gate. Oh, and one thing that I had to learn about Canadian English was what time do you have? For me it was always what time do you make it? But this thread is about nightwear, not me showing off my paltry linguistic tid-bits. *strikes breast* Love and prayers, PP Edited August 31, 2006 by puellapaschalis
brendan1104 Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Some questions- or their answers- you just don't post in public... :

puellapaschalis Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Yes, but I think Brendan might have a point. There are some questions people should just pluck up the courage to ask the relevant person in a community. Love and prayers, PP

brandelynmarie Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Oh puella! : Such a strange thing is language! (Especially American English!) I love watching hot stuff Oliver on Food Network because I want to learn his lingo...
puellapaschalis Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Ok, we've totally hijacked this thread now.... Jamie Oliver speaks...funny I can't place his accent - I know so many British accents and I get confused too easily - and sometimes I actually wonder if he exaggerates it a bit for the cameras! Myself I usually speak standard British English (with what used to be called RP before the world went politically correct and spoilt all the fun), but give me two days back down in Devon and I'll be AAAARRRRRRR'ing like you'd never know. I lived in TO for a while and still can't really tell the different between someone from Windsor ON and Detroit.. Love and prayers, PP
