A Constitutional Republic, not a democracy.

I challenge anyone to find an instance of any of the Founding Fathers referring to the republic as a "democracy."

Neither the US Constitution nor the Declaration of Independence contain the word "democracy."

Which founding documents are you referring to?

I didn't get anything partisan out of this thread  I think a good thrashing out of the merits and flaws of democracy (esp. with regard to public morals etc) from the Catholic point of view is needed! After all, the majority of people in a country may be fine with abortion, gay marriage, etc, but vox populi is not neccesarily vox Dei! Truth is not determined by majority vote (sayeth Cardinal Ratzinger) and this poses interesting conflicts for law makers in a democratic society.

A week's worth of tacos, so very tasty and good for you, to whomever can identify the origin of the word "demos" :)

Democratically elected governments have more choice than, the Abortion Guy vrs. the Anti-Abortion guy.

President Bush got elected for that stance, and when you elect a madman, you get maddness!

Kerry, Bush, you'd see the same things, trust me.

If Kerry was in as president, all of a sudden he would have been on the Television saying,

"My fellow Americans. I told you I was going to take the troops out of Iraq, but with further consultation, I have come to the realization, we need to keep the troops in there for the time being," He would have said. "I will ensure the troops will be removed at the earliest possible time."

All the while, he would be enacting several of the UN treaties which are undermining our society and turning it into the totalitarian state the Illuminati wants!

I read a small comic a couple a months ago, and it reminded me of the Illuminati. They could have had the sign, our canidate won and your's didn't. It made me laugh, because if it was Bush or Kerry, they could have that sign on their lawn. Which Skull and Bones, Pro-Nafta, Pro-War candidate did you vote for! That totally gives me the giggles, because that is how stupid the democratic process has become! I think the next candidtate I will vote for is Robin Williams. LOL!

I'm a cynic, that's about it.

I don't put my trust in princes any more, because the rulers of the land are a bunch of corrupt little weasels and I can't wait until God turns this world upside down!

I was always taught that the US is a Democratic Republic, whether it will remain so after the '08 election (or turn Socialist) is still to be decided by the American people.

The Democratic party has no direct unique association with the general term 'democracy.' The same goes for Republicans and the word 'republic.'

Great Post!!!

Full Truth: I agree with most of your post, John Kerry was no different then Mr. Bush. Mr. Bush took the country to war, a war that Mr. Kerry voted for also, Mr. Kerry is pro-choice and Mr. Bush claimed to be against abortion but even while the Republicans controlled the house and senate, never once proposed a bill to completely outlaw abortion [though if he would have, it would have passed in his first term].

Our founding fathers were very wary of democracy. This is why the House of Representative was elected in their districts and senators were elected by the legistators of their state. The people did not vote for senators.

You can read more about their thinking by reading the Federalist Papers.
