Guest FockeWulf Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 Last time I checked the second amendment protected American citizens from discrimination insofar as gun confiscation and/or overreaching limitations on private ownership are concerned. But then Obama doesn't seem particularly concerned with the Bill of Rights et cetera unless it advances his "progressive" ideology. Whether or not this question acts as a litmus test for induction into the Obama regime remains to be seen, but it does infringe on one's right to privacy (at least in this case legitimately for once). What about those states where there is no record or registration process for firearm transactions? What happens to applicants who tell the truth about owning a gun, but happen to have no registration paperwork to supply? Why do they even need such a record when there is currently NO federal firearm registration process and it remains regulated solely by the states. Typical.
Guest FockeWulf Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 (edited) Just because this issue vexes me like few others, I just want to add... We as Catholics understand the primacy of the right to life, its absolute gravity and priority over all other rights acknowledged by governments. A central tenet of that right must also be the right to self-preservation and the defense of the innocent. What meaning does the right to life have if someone isn't willing to defend life, both their own and others'. The role of the police is primarily to ensure that order is safeguarded and that laws are enforced, but that role does not take precedence over the natural right to defend oneself; nor will the police be there in every instance when you need them, the onus is on you to save your own skin when things go horribly wrong. Judicial precedence has shown time and again that the police are not REQUIRED to defend you, nor are they liable for anything that happens to you as a result of criminal activity. The State is never liable if you fall victim to violence or crime inflicted by others (assuming its not the State itself doing the inflicting). Owning a firearm, aside from its other utilitarian purposes like hunting, sport, etc., is a means to protect yourself. Its so fundamental that I can't even understand the mindset of people that would try to take that right away. Its like taking away the right to eat or breathe. The weapon itself is merely a tool, but its a tool that is so intimately conjoined with the right to self-defense that neither can stand without the other. Not to mention that all the statistics show that CCW Permit holders are responsible for something like 1% of all crimes committed with firearms, and the vast majority of weapons used in crimes were bought on the black market, not at gun stores, gun shows or private sales. America needs to educate itself before it goes the way of Britain or Australia, seeing massive increase in crime rate inversely proportional to the increase in restrictive gun laws and gun banning!! dominicansoul Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 i know that if push came to shove, and i had to defend myself against a would be rapist, robber, killer, etc.... ...i probably wouldn't be able to kill them to defend myself....and would succumb to their attack.... now, my family on the other hand....if i had to protect them... ...i'd kill whoever was trying to hurt them with my bare hands! i wouldn't need a gun!

So yes, he has tried to prevent gun ownership, has tried to curtail the right to defend oneself. Because he has despotic tendencies. His party is despotic, like many other left wing groups, led by such luminaries as Castro, Mao Tse Tung, Stalin, Hitler and Barney the dinosaur.
