I was told aspartame turns your blood to sugar.

Whoever told you that is grossly misinformed. Diabetics consume diet colas and food all the time because it is a sugar substitute.

However, I have heard that aspartame can turn to formaldehyde in heat. Whether that's true or not, I don't care to find out.

I know it's true because I read it on the internet.

That's a crock of bologna if I ever heard one.

Word to the wise people:

Don't believe EVERYTHING you read on the internet.

Discern carefully the sources. ;)

I hear aspartame helps develop strong bones and teeth. ;)

Seriously, aspartame is safe. It is the most researched chemical ever in U.S. history. If you don't like Wikipedia, here is Snopes.com take on it. Yes, it is a very reliable site.

Here is the article on aspartame with tons of credible references.. Like anything, get too much of it, and you could develop problems.

I used to be addicted to Diet Coke (craving it), but it was more of a caffeine addiction that aspartame, I think. The doc told me that I should reduce the caffeine intake because it increases blood pressure - but she didn't say anything about the aspartame. My friend's husband is a doctor, an internist (specialist) who is also a diabetic, and he drinks a lot of diet colas so I asked him about the aspartame, and he said I should worry if I were a laboratory rat who was forced to consume tons of it per day, otherwise, not to worry about it. Drinking too much regular cola would be worse in some ways because of the sugar affecting weight and teeth, as well as the caffeine!

The secret to breaking the addiction? Enter a Monastery where they don't drink any sodas at all! I did lead up to this though because I wanted to withdraw from the caffeine slowly. I stopped drinking the diet colas but took caffeine tablets on a decreasing regime that slowly withdrew all the caffeine from my body. Now I can drink a soda or not, and there is no craving any more. I actually prefer water now, and it is so good for the body! Best thing you can do is to get off the sodas.

I replied to an old topic on this earlier, but didn't realize it was in the "Debate Table" forum. ;)

I believe I have too much aspartame in my system and it's causing problems. <_< I drink a lot of diet cokes and on Sunday, I realized that there might be something wrong. I've looked at everything--from an allergic reaction to tea, to Vitamin D deficiency, to B12 deficiency--but then something else cropped up last night--a non-itchy rash by my collarbone. I looked up "aspartame side effects" and I have several of them:

-decreased tears
-severe intolerance of noise
-dizziness
-memory loss (and I'm only 26)
-parathesia (this started on Sunday as nervous "pins and needles" on my back and down my arms)
-irritability
-palpitations (this started off and on today; but was mild)

...to name a few. Needless to say, I am cutting out the sodas completely. I honestly thought my "pins and needles" thing was going away, but I noticed it got worse immediately after drinking a diet soda. It makes sense.

I hope the reactions don't last too long after I come off it. I'll have to talk to my doctor about aspartame allergies.

For everyone else, here is the list of reactions. You may want to consider seriously limiting consumption, especially if you have several of the symptoms like I do:

When I do stuff like this, my husband laughs at me and says, "OK, Dr. Abby." I like to self-diagnose as well, but if you're really worried about your symptoms you should see a doctor.

Although, just cutting out sodas altogether isn't a wholly bad idea. ;)

The smart guy on Youtube told me that aspartame contains nanotechnological gps chips so that the Illuminati can track you wherever you go.

I'm drinking regular sodas and weaning off them slowly so I don't get any withdraw symptoms like headaches. :)

:hehe: Guilty as charged!

However, I stopped drinking diet cokes yesterday and my symptoms have almost completely disappeared. I still have the "pins and needles" feeling occasionally, but it's not as severe. :)
