Convent Tattoo Ideas

So would you get a tattoo before you entered the convent and if so of what? One idea that came up in chat was the phatmass logo! Id consider AMDG and/or something like these

Man, I can already tell i missed a great night on chat. Unfortunately my sister turned the livingroom into her bedroom so I have no place to set up my laptop.

Plus I need to learn the value of detachment.

Not only what would you get but why? Id go for AMDG which is short for the Jesuit motto Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam meaning for the greater glory of God because it is my motto as well. It is how I[b] try[/b] to live but most of the time fail epically at The Marian symbols would be because I love Mary!

I really like this one--the Marian symbol with a lily.

However, I don't think I could ever get a tattoo. When you get older and your skin starts to lose it's elasticity, the tattoo gets all faded and ugly-looking.

I guess I'd ask first if the convent would be opposed to you having one. There are many people who believe tattoos are a form of self mutilation, and therefore a no-no.

Like I said to another PMer earlier, don't get a tattoo -- no matter what it is. I've truly never met [b]anyone [/b]whose appearance was enhanced by a tattoo. I know that will probably offend folks on here who happen to have tattoos, and I apologize, but that's the way I feel.

Maybe the painting of st.Michael the archangel where he's all in battle and stuff, but that's more elaborate. Smaller symbols are fine too.

This where I know I am of a different generation. I have NO desire to deliberately inflict pain on myself by getting a tattoo. Getting my ears pierced was plenty.

And, well, I think tattoos are tacky. It's nothing personal--it's just I grew up with a whole different set of values. Back in the day, only sailors and jail inmates got tattoos.

I KNOW it's different now and perfectly normal, in fact, very common. So please ignore me (which you will anyway), and go ahead (not that you need my permission). Just don't get a Dominican tattoo and then suddenly realize God has called you to the Carmelites.

But, to be safe, you might check in advance whether the application for the Order you are appying to asks if you have any tattoos or piercings.

I'm sorry I missed chat, too. I was buying and packing up beads for a certain VS'er to make Rosaries..........

Won't offend me--I feel the same way. And, I seriously doubt whether the Queen has any tattoos.

It doesn't offend me that my appearance isn't enhanced by getting a tattoo. I have a trinity knot on my right calf. My intenton behind getting it wasn't the greatest but I have used it to teach the doctrine of the trinity! So, there is some good that came out of it. I got it three days before I was accepted into the Salesians and they have no problem with it. However, o doubt they would let me get another one.

I'm very interested to hear people's opinion of tattoos, especially those in VS!

I was always opposed to tattoos. My sister has quite a few, but I never really understood the purpose of it, and I don't think her appearance has been enhanced by them. In fact, she has often had to "hide" her tattoos -- although the one on her wrist is a little difficult to cover up, even if it is small!

But then I heard of a mother who lost her son a few years ago, and she wanted to get a very tiny tattoo, just a little heart, and put it somewhere (maybe on the base of her thumb, near the wrist, she was thinking) as a memorial of her son who died. And then I started to think that maybe it wasn't such a bad idea. She was probably the last person in the world I would picture ever getting a tattoo!! But for me, I suppose it's hard to overcome the idea of tattoos that I grew up with, much like IgnatiusofLoyola - that the only people who had them were sailors and inmates!

The topic of tattoos came up the other day with one of my brother's friends, as well, and it was just very interesting to me. It's caused me to rethink the whole idea of tattoos; I'm still not quite sure what I think about it now.

Regarding religious communities, I know quite a few who have accepted Sisters who had gotten tattoos before entering. But in my experience, I can't think of a single one that has refused a candidate because she had a tattoo.

That might be the one kind of tattoo that would require a religious community to reject a candidate, perhaps?

Maybe visible ones? Like on the hands and lower arms and the face? The foot? Ankle? Calves? depends on attire?

If I'd get a religious tattoo it would be more symbolic and wanting to put something on my body that means a lot to me. Not to be prettier or anything. And I think I will someday, I just need a lot of time to think what and where, and where to get it. So yeah, prolly going to get one. I don't have any modymod except a lot of ear piercings and stretched ears.
